This choice: Yozora kicks in the door, carrying a crate of something • Go Back...Chapter #6What's in the Box? by: Katagara With a bang, the clubroom door flew open to reveal the club’s raven-haired president carrying what appeared to be a large unmarked crate. In her shadow, the familiar frills of Kobato’s lolita dress could be seen obscured by three identical crates, noticeably wobbling in the middle-schooler’s grip.
“Contemptuous wench…ugh…how dare y-you treat a True Ancestor with such-“ the small girl’s roundabout complaints were cut short as Yozora set her load atop Kobato’s own, sending the wannabe vampire crashing to the floor with a squeak and a series of clinks emanating from the containers. The peaceful atmosphere already broken by her entrance, Yozora assumed an authoritative stance.
“Everyone, I believe I’ve made a breakthrough in what it takes to make friends. Tell me, what’s the cornerstone to building bonds with others?” A few seconds of silence later, she resumed. “That’s right, you don’t know. The reason we don’t have friends is because we lack something that is key to starting interpersonal relationships: competitiveness. Think about it. You see it all the time in movies and on TV, a pair connecting over shared aspiration of being the best they can be, their mutual respect in one another’s own abilities and drive to outdo the other bringing them together, bound by the iron bonds of competition!”
Accompanied by overly lavish gestures and a tone that grew more and more passionate by the syllable, Yozora’s monologue ended with the hard-edged girl striking a pose more akin to a cheesy manga character than a club president giving a speech. The silence that followed was painful, the only sound being a whimper from Kobato as she sat herself upright and a yawn from Maria as she began waking up from her nap. Finally, the awkwardness was brought to an end by Kodaka, as he voiced the question that was on everyone’s minds.
“So what’s in the boxes?”
Yozora face shifted into her normal mischievous smile as she turned to her payload and began unboxing the first crate. “I’m glad you asked Kodaka, it’s something that can help even a delinquent like you make a dozen friends. It occurred to me that not everyone has a talent or skill they can be competitive in, and not every competition can yield the spirited camaraderie I was describing. I, myself, have a long history of crushing my peers academically, but their resulting jealousy has made them unsuited for becoming my long-term rivals, much less my friends.”
Kodaka grimaced at this blatant lie as his classmate continued her explanation. “Clearly, it is important that whatever you compete in has to have some degree of fun involved. That’s why these people are able to forge such strong friendships through things like sports. And if they can do it, there’s no reason we can’t too, right?” she concluded, punctuating her musing by leaning the crate’s lid against the wall. “I know that didn't answer your question, per say, but I wanted to prepare you for what I’m confident will be our ticket to popularity."
Turning once again to face her audience, the leader of the Neighbor’s Club wore a wide smirk as she brandished… indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
