Chapter #7

Staying in your shared body

"The remote?" Diego asked.

You had not intended to state your question out loud. "Uh..." You started to say, leaning your neck further backwards, away from Diego. Our heads were far enough apart to so that we could turn our necks to face each other, so long as we bent our necks. You rub the back of your neck, trying to think of some excuse. 'The one that incompletely fused us together.' you thought, being careful not to make the same mistake. "Uh... the grey remote with the screen... and four buttons..."

"The fusion remote..." Diego finished your thought, to your surprise. "You were holding it in your hand, just a few minutes ago. You insisted on carrying it." His voice had an accusing edge to it. You watched as he used his hand to pat the left pocket, of the jeans you shared. You decided to mirror his action and patted the right pocket, but neither of you had the remote. "Where did you last have it, Miguel?"

"Just, outside..." you said, knowing that was where you had just used the remote to get yourself in this situation. Diego then turned his head as he took a step away from the counter. Your foot remained planted, unmoving. You felt slight tension in the muscles down the middle of your chest and abdomen when your side of the body did follow Diego's side.

Coming to a jerky stop, Diego turned his neck to face you. "We need to get the remote before someone else finds it."

'No shit!' you exclaimed in your head. 'Only problem is that I don't know how to move. How we move.' You pondered telling him that you had already used the remote, but thought better of it. He does not remember how things were originally. "Yeah, yeah." you say out loud. Praying not to fall flat on your face, you lifted your leg off of the ground. Diego seemed to brace his leg, like you would have done if you had control over both. Swinging your leg and him around, you planted your foot in front of his. Almost like muscle memory, you knew to brace your leg when Diego lifted his. It felt awkward and the first few steps were slower than normal, but you were able to move together with Diego. You could not explain it, but you remembered how to walk with him, as if you had done it your whole life.

You and Diego crossed the space between the counter and the front door without falling, as you had previously feared you would. He reached in front of you to grab and turn the handle of the door. Opening it, you stepped forward and outside. The bell jingled above, but you ignored it. Just outside, you noticed the remote lying on the ground. It was in the same spot where you had just been before using it.

Without needing to say any words, you and Diego bent your knees. Before you could pick the remote up, Diego grabbed the remote with his hand. Holding it between you, he spun the remote around slowly, examining it. "Phew... it doesn't look to be damaged." He then turned to look at you. "Dude, you had one job."

Feeling defensive, you quickly make up an excuse. "I had thought I put it in my pocket." You then reach for the remote, but Diego holds it out of your reach.

"Whatever, we have it back now." Diego turns back to face you, his face a mixture of excitement and curiosity. "If we selected ourselves, do you think we would count as one target or two?"

The question surprised you, "Uh... one."

He frowned. "Yeah, your probably right." He shrugged his shoulder, and you felt the muscle between your necks twitch. "Want to test it out again?"

You assumed that Diego somehow knew about the girls you had previously tested the remote on. It seemed that the remote was far more powerful then you had realized, giving people false memories to accommodate whatever fusion happened. If that were true, it would make sense that Diego would remember that first test. You and he would have obviously had to have found and used the remote together. "Lets wait till tomorrow. It will be the weekend, and we can spend the day testing it." You quickly say.

"Not curious now... fine. I guess we still need to mind the shop until we close." Diego said before turning around.

Still to your amazement, you easily moved with Diego to step back inside the shop. You were not sure how, but the remote must have given you muscle memory of how to coordinate the body you shared with Diego. You did not remember anything about this life, just how to move with him. Diego and you then walked back behind the counter, where your backpack hung on a chair. You were tempted to take back the remote and his the de-fuse button, but you found yourself more curious about how things were now. Believing that it would not hurt to remain joined to Diego, you helped him unzip the pouch and place the remote safely inside.
