Chapter #5

Partially Fused

Pointing the remote, you selected Diego first and then the younger brother, Danny. Green checks appeared next to the first and second target on the screen. Just before hitting the fuse button, the Martinez brothers turned a corner and disappeared from sight. The remote flashed a warning on the screen 'Targets out of visual sight. Move closer to targets.' The green checks had also turned into red Xs. You frowned, remembering one of the basic rules about the remote. You pick up your pace to chase after the siblings. As your approached the building where the brothers disappeared behind, you could hear the Danny's excited voice. Turning the corner quickly, you saw the brothers standing just on the other side, but you did not have time to stop, bumping into the older one. Dazed, you fumbled with the remote in your hand and dropped it. "Sorry" you say automatically.

"Yeah no problem... Mike?" Diego said.

"Hey Mikey!" Danny said with mischievous smile. "Hey, fancy running into you here. You here to see Marisa?" Danny said his sister's name with a tone indicating he knew about your crush.

"Oh, hey Diego... Danny." You said Danny's name in a flat tone. Looking past them, you noticed the store the three of you were standing in front of was the Martinez's antique store. Mrs. Martinez ran it, and her children were called upon to help sometimes.

"Looks like you dropped... whatever this is." Danny reached down and grabbed the remote before you could. "What does it do?" You did not notice him pressing one of the buttons, switching the second target.

"It's just a new device I got for my phone." You snatched back the remote and pocked it.

"Well if you are here to see Marisa, she won't be at the store for another couple of hours. She's at a friend's to study. Unless you wanted to buy something..." Diego said.

"No, that's okay. Sorry for bumping into you." You apologize again as you walk past the brothers, slowly. You still wanted to test the device but you did not want to walk too far away.

"Alright see you, dude." you heard Diego say from behind you as he opened the door to the shop. A bell chimed, signaling that someone was entering the store.

You kept walking a few more feet before you dared to look behind you. The Martinez brothers had entered the store. You take out the remote, and quickly check it over. "Few." You sigh with relief. The remote did not even have a scratch from the fall. Surprisingly though, only the target two had a check next to it. As you walked closer to the store, you passed by one of the windows. It was tinted, so you could only see your reflection, but a green check replaced the red X next to the first target. "Guess it works through windows." Then the red X appeared again by the first target, and then changed back to a check.

A message then flashed across the upper part of the screen 'Targets becoming too far apart. Use with caution.' You looked at the remote quizzically. "I guess the Martinez brothers are splitting up, better use it quickly." Without hesitation, you pressed the fuse button. You were surprised when a flash of light engulfed you.

You were suddenly standing inside the shop, behind the cash register. Having visited Marisa here, you recognized the oak walls and display cases. A couple of bills were in your right hand, or what should have been your right hand. Your skin was darker, as if you had spent time tanning. You realized that Danny must have unintentionally set you as one of the targets. Another hand, also the same color, was open, palm-up beside your right. It took a long second for you to realize that the other hand was your left, or should have been your left. You could not move it; you could not feel it. It dawned on you that you also could not feel your whole left arm, or your left leg, or the left side of your body. You felt a cold chill on the back of your neck. Something went terribly wrong with this fusion.
