“I'm sorry Mrs. Thompson but there's no easy way to say this,” Dr. Ryans solemnly said. “I've been your family's doctor for many years and, while it pains me to say this, I must be blunt, I don't think your body can handle any more treatments. There are few options left if you still want to have another child yourself. Adoption is always an option as well.”
“No, adoption is out of the question,” Karen answered sternly. “If the baby is not my own flesh and blood then there's no meaning to me. Aren't there any other options,” she asked desperately.
“Well you could always try to find a surrogate for your eggs, though finding one may be difficult and expensive. However, from what I know about your financial situation I don't see it as a viable option, especially since you have to still take care of little Lilith here,” he said as he pat Lilith on the head.
“Fine,” Karen said abruptly, “come Lilith, we're leaving.” With that Karen stormed out of the doctor's office. Lilith, not wanting to be rude, waved good-bye to Dr. Ryans and chased after her mother.
When Lilith caught up to her mother in the parking lot she saw a familiar sight; her mother with tears streaming down her cheeks. The years of stress were wearing on Karen and as she walked to her car she broke down. The constant hospital visits and various fertility treatments had cost the Thompsons thousands of dollars and Mr. Thompson was forced to work long hours just to keep the family afloat.
Just as Karen was loosing herself in an sea of despair she heard, “Don't worry Mama, everything will be alright.”
Karen smiled slightly, “Don't worry dear, it's nothing, mama just got some bad news, that's all. It doesn't seem like you'll be getting a little brother or sister anytime soon honey.”
“Don't be sad Mama! You still have me and Papa,” Lilith happily replied.
“Ooh, Lilith!” Karen said as she tightly hugged her daughter.
“Mama,” Lilith hesitantly began, “what is sar...cirr-uhmm...circle-gate?”
“Surrogate, dear,” her mother replied, “a surrogate is a nice woman who helps other women have babies. A surrogate holds onto one mommy's baby until they're born and then she gives the baby back to the other mommy.”
“Are you gonna get one of those people to help you then,” Lilith excitedly asked.
“No...unfortunately they cost money and only really nice surrogates work for free,” her mother said sadly.
“Mmm,” Lilith began thinking. Then it hit her, she announced confidently, “I'll be your surrogate, and I won't even charge you! I'm really nice right?”
Shocked, her mother replied, “Oh Lilith it's not that easy, but thank you for the offer. You know, It's times like these that I wonder which of us is more grown up.”
As the mother and daughter continued to talk a strange man happened to pass by. Dr. Erich von Drachenberg, known by many in the hospital as a bit of a 'Mad Scientist' overheard the two's problems. (un)fortunately for them he had been working on a highly advanced and highly controversial fertility drug. He had a difficult time selling the idea to his colleges. They mocked him for making the drug so portable that one could easily shoot it through a blow-gun; who'd ever need a fertility treatment at a distance? The benevolent mad scientist decided to... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
