Dr. Saunders sighed. "Well, he's most adamant on not telling your brother and sister. He said they're too young to deal with this - and frankly, the legal department is in agreement. They fear your siblings wouldn't be able to keep quiet if they knew the truth."
"Okay..." you started. "But that mean..."
The doctor nodded. "Yes, that means that you will all have to keep up the charade even at home. That will make it more difficult for Allison so you help is more critical than ever."
You were not pleased to hear this. The whole concept of your girlfriend having your mother's body and assuming her life was difficult enough. But you had assumed that at least in the privacy of your home your would be able to relax and be honest. Still, you could understand your dad's mindset - even if you weren't happy about it. "Sure, yeah, I get it," you said grudgingly. "Is that it?"
Dr. Saunder's face tightened and he turned away. "Honestly, Tim, you need to talk to your father about all this. I'll just say that he will have some guidelines on your behavior. You can get dressed and a nurse will be by shortly to take you to see Allison."
With that he hurried out of the room, leaving you wondering exactly what he meant. You pulled yourself up and slowly dressed, wincing a bit in pain as you worked around your bruises. As you were about to leave you heard a knock at the door. Before you could respond, it opened and in walked your dad.
He looked completely drained and it dawned on you that, as difficult as this was for you, it had to be much worse for him. Without saying a word he wrapped his arms around you. You hugged each other silently for several minutes. Finally he pulled away, met your gaze and asked simply "So, the doctor explained it all?"
You nodded, afraid your voice would break if you spoke.
He paused, trying to find the right words. "Tim, this is going to be difficult for all of us. I know I can count on you to step up. If this is going to work we're going to have to work to keep up appearances ...."
