Ash could understand them

"Wha...What's going on?!"
The ditto simply continued to stare at him, until his new-found intelligence slowly unraveled the situation before him.
"Oh, so you are ditto, right?"
"Ditto!" they all said in unison.
"Well, why are you trying to be my clothes?"
Suddenly, ash felt one of his socks melting, and saw a Ditto rush out from out of his shoe. The Ditto then mimed the image of a group of Ditto crying and running away from large Pokemon. Then it mimed the ditto finding Ash, May, and Dawn. Finally, it mimed the image of the Ditto sneakily becoming the clothes, and all of the ditto smiling as clothes.
"Ah, so you are using us as protection against more powerful Pokemon?"
"Ditto!" they all exclaimed
As much as he was proud of being presented such a goal, he was not comfortable being their ride. To be frank, it made him squeamish. However, he could not just leave the Ditto. Ash thought long and hard, before he came to the conclusion that since the Ditto meant no harm, surely sneaking the responsibility onto May or Dawn would not be terribly immoral. Committed to the idea, he asked the Ditto.
"We'll look out for you, but on one rule: you must follow what I say and stick to it. Can you do that?"
