Isabel hadn't noticed when it had gotten stuck to the metal bracket, but the tights around her right knee were not budging from their current position. She felt a small hole, maybe an inch in diameter, where the stretchy material left her leg and moved up to the desk. When Isabel had tried to yank her leg free from the desk, she had only ripped the hole wider, which was accompanied by the sound of ripping fabric. The noise wasn't too loud, but in the relative quiet of the exam room, everyone around her had heard it. She felt quite a few states on her after that.
But now any attention had dissipated, as most other test takers were scrambling to finish as many questions as they could in the last few minutes.
Isabel ran her fingers over the bare skin of her right knee for the hundredth time in the previous few minutes. Desperate for a way to get her tights free, Isabel had come to the conclusion that her only option (short of completely removing the tights. There was no way she could do thatching front of everyone!) was to rip the stuck section away from the rest of the tights.
And that was why Isabel had been waiting. If she ripped the fabric again, everyone would hear it! But, if she waited until time was up on the exam and everyone was moving around again, she might have a chance of not being noticed.
What seemed like an eternity later, the professor finally declared, "Time's up! Bring your exams to the front of the class, please."
As the chorus of shifting bodies and bags began to sound, Isabel made her move. She tucked both her arms under the desk, grabbed the stuck portion of fabric with both hands, and yanked downward as hard as she could. She heard the tear, but it sounded mercifully quiet now among the ambient noise.
With a sigh of relief, Isabel stood up from the desk and grabbed her bag and test. She looked down at her right leg and saw she was only showing skin from an inch or so above her knee and downward. It still covered the few inches of thigh visible below the hem of her skirt, for which Isabel was thankful. She never would have worn such a short skirt without tights underneath. The lower portion of her tights was crumpled around her ankle, having fallen after being torn away from the rest of the garment.
Isabel handed in her exam and quickly made for the door. Nothing too weird about wearing tights on one leg right? she thought as she walked down the hallway, trying not to draw any stares.
Isabel ducked into the ladies room for a moment and leaned up against the wall, breathing deeply and trying to calm herself down. She took a moment to pull off the useless fabric dangling from her right ankle and throw it in the trash can.
Isabel looked around, making sure she was alone in the bathroom, before reaching under her skirt and pulling her tights up. She wanted to make sure they stayed high enough and were in no danger of sinking lower on her legs.
Exiting the bathroom and heading off to her next class, Isabel failed to realize...
