Saving Rei was your utmost concern. You loved this girl ever since childhood, where you promised to marry her when you became adults. Unfortunately, acting on this promise became increasingly hard as you grew older. Your hesitance to take action led Rei into the hands of your best friend, Hisashi. But you were hesitant no longer. With Rei unaware of the impending danger, you ran through the second-floor corridor until you reached the door to her homeroom.
You barged straight in, ignoring the uproar from the seated students and their teacher. Sitting at a desk closest to the windows, Rei turned to investigate the clamor you instigated. Her hazel eyes stared at you, complimenting the natural, brown hair that flowed down the length of her back. She was a beautiful girl, and today was no exception to this. But you had a purpose here today.
“Rei, we need to leave.” You stated, walking up to her.
“What are you doing?! We’re in the middle of class!” Rei protested. There wasn’t any time for pointless arguments like this. You leaned towards her, giving her the most subtle explanation for the horrors you saw at the front gate.
“A teacher was just killed outside the school. Get up, because I’m not leaving you here.” You made sure that these whispers were muddled enough to reach only Rei. She seemed hesitant to move, though. You had wasted enough time here, grabbing her wrist and pulling Rei away from the desk. Her confusion was obvious, offering little resistance as you dragged her out of the classroom.
This compliance was short-lived, however, as she pulled away from your grasp and stood in the middle of the corridor outside her classroom.
“Hey, is this a joke? What are you trying to do here?” Rei had every reason to question you. Her years of waiting to receive your confession were fruitless. The feelings that she perhaps held for you at some point were gone, and she was starting to move on. And now, here you were. It looked like there were deeper implications behind your actions, but she was wrong. This was a real situation, and it demanded haste.
You grabbed Rei, forcing her against one of the windows that lined the corridor. This was the only way you could make her see reason – that you were serious about keeping her alive.
“W-Wha-?! What are you doing?!” Rei was more shocked than anything else to find herself in this position. You pinned her arms against the glass, and lowering your head forward with a gentle expression.
“Rei, please… I need you to trust me.”
Rei saw the truth behind you words, if not a little bit too late.
“Wait… you can't be serious.”

The crackling of static poured out from the speakers embedded into the ceiling of the school. From behind the mechanical whirring, an unknown teacher warned the entire school about the events that took place at the main gate. He was rather conservative with the details behind the encounter.

“Attention, all students. A fight has broken out on-campus.
Please follow your instructors and evacuate the school. I repeat,
a fight has broken out on-campus. Please follow your instructors-”

“What is… oh god, help me!”
The sounds of a life-or-death struggle filled the school, as cries of help were scattered about the breaking of glass and random items crashing to the floor. A dying scream marked the demise of the broadcaster, as silence took over the intercom.
The atmosphere grew especially grim following this silence.
All of a sudden, massive panic erupted inside of the school. Standing amidst one of the most trafficked hallways in the school, you knew that the stampedes were going to be a threat. Surveying the immediate area, you found the door to the female restrooms beside the classroom you emerged from.
“Quick, into the restroom!” You woke Rei from her trance, as you both stormed into the restroom.
Right as you bolted the door, pandemonium engulfed the school. Hordes of students charged down the corridor with little care for the safety of others. It didn't take long for screams to flood the corridor, as some of the students were unlucky enough to encounter whatever killed the broadcaster.
“It's a complete massacre.” Rei muttered, standing in front of a window at the end of the restroom. You walked up beside her, sharing her view of the carnage that unfolded on the ground floor. Students funneled out onto the track field in the back of the school, only to encounter a swathe of shuffling, cumbersome monsters hounding the doors.
“They're coming back to life… just like in the movies.” This seemed all too true, as you watched a deceased student rise from the ground and start attacking those who were once friends. These things displayed nothing other than the desire to feast upon flesh, and emitted nothing but deep, guttural moans. They were walking corpses.
