It is a lazy, relaxing Saturday afternoon. You decide to take a hike. Maybe it will help to relieve the stress of everyday city life. Maybe it will help you to set aside your financial worries for a while. Certainly it will help you to escape the pressures and demands you face when surrounded by others - loved ones included.

You dress in comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. You travel light, taking nothing but a walking stick and a canteen of water.

And for once, you decide to take the path less-traveled.
Hannah stood in the open door of her new apartment. It feels weird to be on her own, but she's getting used to the idea. She moved far from her hometown in Montanna, where she had grown up her entire life. Now, in the great New York City, where any opportunity is a possibility, she looks for a job so she can begin her own life. She is working at a local diner, trying to save money to pay off her school loan, and to help pay for her new apartment.

She often wonders about the friend who she had believed had been more than that. They had sparked a passion that was undeniable their junior year in October. It lasted until that September, when they were off to college. She wondered what became of him. If he found his true love. If maybe they were meant to be together. She wasn't sure if they were soulmates, but she misses him, and wishes that maybe they could meet, and then she could see for herself if the burning flame of passion they had created has finally blew out.
Howdy, pilgrims!

I've received two e-mails in the past 24 hours from members of the Shelter, asking about my forthcoming novel, Offspring. I very much appreciate the interest. However...maybe I'm nuts, but I really don't want to turn this forum into a pitch mechanism for my books. I already have other means for promoting my work. This site is intended to promote the craft of writing, and provide a supportive environment.

Okay, I realize that a few members of the Shelter will eventually buy one of my books because: A. They feel a connection B. They like my style of writing, C. They pity the author.
And when they read the story, I expect they will like it very much, or dislike it very much. I doubt there'll be much middle ground.

Please keep in mind that I've been particpating in WC long before I ever sold a book. I didn't come here to beg people to buy my work. With that in mind, I'll tell you a few things about Offspring.

The book's release is still a few months away, (Oct. 6 release date) though some people have already, and inexplicably, pre-ordered through Amazon.com. Don't ask me why. I honestly can't imagine why. Heck, the cover art isn't even up on Amazon, yet!

I digress. I sold the book in March, 2004. The wheels of publishing turn slowly, uh? Truth is, I wanted to delay publication until my retirement from the day job, which by the way, now coincides with the release date. Don't you love it when a plan comes together?

Since selling the first book, I've had several conversations with my publisher, the Thomas Dunne imprint of St. Martin's Press, regarding additional stories. I'm very pleased to announce that I sold two additonal books to St. Martin's just last month. This allows me to tell the story in the form of a trilogy. We've also discussed additional spin-offs, as many as two additonal trilogies, after Offspring runs its course.

Offspring falls into one of three genres, depending upon ones perspective. Supernatural epic, dark fantasy, or horror. It has a few rather graphic moments. The good guys are, for the most part, regualr Joes. Flawed in myriad ways. Course langauge upon occasion, thoughtlessness, vanity, disdain for their fellow man... and capable of great heroism when the need arises. Sorta' like some very real people I know. The bad guys are...bad. Really bad. I mean, "fifty miles of south Texas blacktop road" bad.
Luis walked out of the New York City airport, with his luggage in hand. He had a smile on his face, and a huge ball of happiness inside him. He couldn't wait to find a job for him, so he could begin his new life. He'd need to begin a job so he could support himself. It was a good thing that he had the money, and the family to help him out, and get an apartment, and enough to pay for two months in advance. He knew that the opportunity was here...in New York City. He could feel it.

He went into the twenty-one story apartment building, and walked over to where the elevators were. He pushed the up button, and waited almost ten minutes before he got one that was going up. He was on the twelveth floor. He smiled. He liked being in high places, where he could overlook things. He was syked. All he needed was a small job to help with the rent and other necessities, and he'd be fine. All he needed now, was a newspaper.
He unlocked the door to his apartment, and smiled. He saw that his furniture had arrived. They weren't exactly in the positions he wanted them, but..you can't complain. He set his luggage down on the floor, setting his keys, and his handbag on the counter in the kitchen. He picked up his luggage, and walked into the room that would serve as his room. He came back out, and shut his door, remembering that he had forgotten to shut it.

THE END.

You've come to the end of the story. You can:

  1. Step back to the previous chapter.
  2. Start reading the story from the beginning.
