I've seen photos of Mom when she was my age, and I was now the splitting image of her at 16.
"Not gonna faint again, are you dear?" said the nurse beside me. Still trying to grasp what had happened, I slowly shook my head as let out some deep breaths.
"Ieee.. I don't ... think so" I said. I noticed that the nurse responded with a comforting smile - though it didn't really do much to calm me down.
"I know that this is a lot to take in, dear. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me" she said
"Ok...." I uttered, "first off... why am I a girl?"
"As I previously told you, dear, your entire body was extremely damaged from the accident, especially the lower half." the nurse said, "Therefore the best option was to give you a new body"
"Wait... what?" I uttered
"It's a very dangerous, and thus rarely done, operation, but basically we surgically took out and preserved the brain while constructing a new body to house the brain using brand new nanotech that is able to replicate the target genes" the nurse explained.
"However", she continued, "the nanotech is unable to recreate XY chromosomes unfortunately."
"But that doesn't explain why I look like my deceased mother when she was my age" I impatiently said
"Well, considering that trying to recreate your body without the other chromosome was going to be - difficult - we instead decided to use a sample that was the closest to your genes - specifically that of your mother's...." The nurse said ,"If I recall correctly, dear, your mother did sign her body up to be used for scientific research...after death..."
I nodded slowly.
I couldn't believe that not only was I now a girl, I was also now a completely perfect clone of my dead mother. In fact, it all felt rather surreal.
