I fell asleep pretty easily that night; probably because of the drugs being pumped into me. I woke up just as the sun started to peek through the window the next morning.
Sitting up in bed, I soon realized that I’d been disconnected from the IV. “Probably weaning me off the drugs.”
I had a few moments to myself, before Rachel came into the room. “Morning, Brian.”
“Morning, Rachel.” Looking at her, I said, “How are you, today?”
“I’m doing fine.” Walking over to me, Rachel said, “How about you?”
“Pretty good; considering what’s happened to me.”
Checking my vitals, Rachel said, “Your father is outside; he...wanted to talk to you.”
“Okay.” Sighing, I said, “Let him in.”
It wasn’t long before dad was standing by my bed. “Hi, kiddo.”
“Hi dad.” Pausing, I said, “Where’s Aaron?”
“He’s at home.” Sighing, he said, “I wanted a chance for just you and I to talk.”
“About what?” getting defensive, I said, “How you let the doctors turn me into a girl?”
“I didn’t have much of a choice, Brian.” Looking at me, Dad said, “It was either this; or they’d make you a sexless male.”
“Shouldn’t I have been a part of the decision making?” looking at Dad, I said, “This is my life we’re talking about.”
“They needed a decision almost as soon as you got here, Brian.” Taking a breath, Dad said, “You were losing a lot of blood; and there wasn’t enough time to wake you up before it was too late.”
“I don’t know the first thing about being a girl!”
“I’ll help you with that.” Pausing, Dad said, “As soon as you’re out of the hospital, we’ll go shopping for your new wardrobe.”
“New wardrobe?” confused, I said, “What’s wrong with my old one?”
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed. But,” pausing, Dad said, “Your new frame is...smaller than it was before the accident.”
Looking down, I realized that Dad was right. I’d weighed about 180 before; but now I’d have to guess that I weighed 130 when wet. “Okay, fine.” Sighing, I said, “But nothing girly.”
“That’s okay with me.” Pausing, Dad said, “Patrick and Eric are planning to come by later; they’re relieved to hear that you’re awake.”
“Have they...seen the new me?”
“Yeah, they have.” Looking at me, dad said, “I’m not entirely sure they’re used to it yet.”
