Chapter #5

Crime Scene Investigation.

The quartet began looking around the room for any clues they could find to wrongdoing. It was a strange bunch to be sure, the two CIA agents, the Interpol officer Neil and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police detective Aiko. However given the possibility of Dust (which all but Aiko were aware of) and the possible yakuza connections Matsuyama may have had (which is what brought Aiko) the ragtag group was definitely required. They could, however, not find any evidence to support their suspicions of foul play. At that moment someone entered the room.

"Who...?" Craig asked turning to see Rie. "What's she doing here, this is a crime scene?" he grumbled.

"I'll ask her." Aiko stated before speaking to the idol in Japanese, "What are you doing? This is a crime scene, you shouldn't be here."

"I... I wanted to come back to pay my respects." she replied, "The officers outside told me it would be a good idea to come up here and talk to you people so you could go over my story personally."

Aiko relayed the information back to Craig who merely looked irritated, "Is she stupid?" he growled, "We don't need her fooling around up here. We have her story and we can check its veracity without her."

"But Mr. Robertson..." Aiko started.

"No buts. She goes." he ordered.

Aiko shot him a glare, "Then I'll go with her back to her apartment." she stated.

"Are you fucking kidding me, Hayashi? I need you here!" he exclaimed.

"Maybe in America you're taught to do things half-way but here in Japan we're thorough." she replied, "I can interview her there to make sure her story is consistent, then check her apartment for anything out of sorts. The leader of the largest family for the Ando Clan lives in the penthouse of the complex. That doesn't mean Umeda herself has yakuza connections but as the lead detective for Division 4 I will NOT let this opportunity pass me up to do a bit of investigating into that complex."

Craig stared at her but knew that he wasn't going to win. She had the same strong-willed look he'd seen from many other foreign officers who some times resented American agents attempting to bully them. "Fine, go." he replied, "But report back to me with any findings ASAP."

"Robertson, sir, I'd like to go with them if that's alright." Amelie stated walking up besides Craig.

"Fuck, you too?" he asked in annoyance.

"Sir, I'm fluent in five languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Korean so I won't have any problems communicating with Miss Umeda." she stated plainly, "Likewise it would allow us to cover more ground and have access to the same information on the off chance the TMPD isn't willing to play ball."

"You raise a good point, Owens. I can see why you're so well regarded around here." Craig stated. Amelie was 29 but was treated with the respect of someone with two decades of superiority and seniority seen as being all-business and always getting results. "Alright, go with them."

"Thank you, sir." she stated as she left with Aiko and Rie.

As the three women got into Rie's car and started driving Aiko smiled at the singer. "Good acting job back there Ishikawa. That idiot really thought you were some bumbling girl." she stated.

"Kondo, you idiot, what are you doing?! Talking so openly in front of the American woman like that!" Rie, really Shingo Ishikawa once more, exclaimed.

"Don't worry, I'm on your side." Amelie stated with a smirk. "We're a lot like you, Ishikawa, playing these roles. In fact, why don't we clear things up about who everyone is." She pointed at Rie, "You're really Shingo Ishikawa, member of the Sawamura family branch of the Ando Clan. You used Dust to kill Matsuyama and have been Rie Umeda, a popular singer, ever since."

She then pointed towards Aiko, "You're Masahiro Kondo, a lieutenant for another Ando Clan branch, the Sayama family. For the past six months you've been Aiko Hayashi after she was promoted to lead detective of the organized crime division and promised to crack down on yakuza. Your 'position' allows you to help keep the police off the backs of the Ando clan while continuing to crack down on other yakuza clans." she explaiend.

Finally she pointed to herself. "I'm William Royce, an American. I was part of the CIA-Mossad joint group that helped to create Dust to make intelligence work much easier. However I saw an opportunity for profit. I took the notes and some of the Dust and smuggled it into Japan three years ago by taking over a rookie agent, Amelie. There I looked up an old contact of mine, a man named Wataru Arai who had been leader of the of Arai family. By the time I got in contact with him again he had become head of the the entire Ando Clan. I offered him the Dust and ensured a constant supply of drugs and weapons for the Ando Clan so long as he would give me a cut of total money from Dust." Amelie smiled, "Obviously he accepted and it didn't take long for Dust to make its way into hands around the world."

Ishikawa looked at the agent and detective in astonishment, "But then how have you been these people for so long? Three years and six months? There would still be gaps when the drug wears off."

"Ha!" Royce laughed, "They tell you that, right? That you only stay in a body for a set time? That if your body dies so do you?" he asked. "When your body dies, you 'die' in the sense that the body you're inhabiting becomes your new body. When you take a body, their consciousness is booted into your body which is out of comission due to the effects of the Dust. If your 'real' body dies, that person is the one killed. For all intents and purposes, Amelie Owens and Aiko Hayashi died three years and six months ago respectively."
