Chapter #6

Sakuma & Kiyota

    by: Unknown

You are Kiyota the Braixen, and you’re watching your trainer walk out his apartment door. The second he leaves, you jump to work.

It is his birthday today. It doesn’t seem he remembered, being so busy and all, but you definitely did! You’ve been planning all month to have the perfect surprise ready for him -- his favorite lumiose galettes, homemade with love! Of course, being a Pokémon, you’ve never cooked anything before… but it couldn’t be that hard!

You and your trainer Sakuma used to spend many a lazy afternoon together, wandering the beautiful city and meeting all sorts of interesting people. But nowadays, he spends all of his time studying at the Lumiose City Academy, leaving you to lounge around in his apartment, doing housework and trying to kill time. You always wish you could just go on adventures together like you used to… but Sakuma is just so busy nowadays, you can’t bring yourself to impose on him. You just do what you can to make him happy, whenever he’s around.

You pulled open your personal chest, retrieving all the supplies you had been gathering over the months in preparation for today. With this, you noticed your first problem -- all the ingredients, the flour, the apricorns, the berries, were soggy and moist. You realize you probably should’ve picked a better container to keep these in. “Well, it’ll probably be fine…” you think to yourself, kneading the squishy, foul-smelling berries in your paw. “He probably won’t even notice!” Still, panic was already starting to creep in.

The dough crumbled when you tried to roll it out, the berries melted in your hands, the recipe insisted on ingredients you had never even heard of, and time was quickly running out until your trainer returned home. You tried to calm your nerves by reminiscing on old days while you worked.

Sakuma never had any interest in becoming a serious Pokémon trainer. He always wanted to become an engineer, and improve society as a whole instead of seeking personal glory. Still, when he left his hometown to study in Lumiose city, his mother insisted he get a starter Pokémon to keep him safe. Back when he was alone in Lumiose, you were his only friend, and the two of you spent all day together, going on adventures. But now, he has real friends. Human friends. And you? You were just… his Pokémon.

You guess you should be thankful he at least never keeps you in a Pokéball.

You realize with a start that you’ve left the oven running this entire time.

The sorry excuses for galettes looked mangled and burnt, with crust that was both soggy and overbrowned, and the berries a sloppy mess. You whimpered a little as you looked down on the birthday treat you had been so looking forward to creating. How could you have failed so spectacularly? Any human could have done this easily. Maybe that’s why Sakuma doesn’t hang out with you much anymore. Maybe you don’t deserve him in the first place. You’ll never be as smart, or funny, or charismatic as all Sakuma’s real friends are. You’ll always just be his dumb, useless Pokémon.

Your thoughts are interrupted when you hear your trainer opening the doorway, and you realize there are tears in your eyes. “Kiyota, I’m back!” he called, and you cringed. You felt the panic in your chest, and wanted more than anything to hide all the evidence of your little venture, but you were frozen in place. You could only stand there, covered in flour, clutching the foul-smelling mixture in your paws as he walked in. “Uh… whoa. What have you been up to?”

"I-I'm sorry..." you say, feeling the tears flow more freely now. "I was set up to make a nice surprise for you, but... I-I just can't do anything right..."

“Whoa, Kiyota...” Sakuma frowned, tossing his bag aside and kneeling down to face you. He took you up in his arms, and you cried weakly into his shoulder as he comforts you, wetting his jacket with tears. You had been trying to keep these emotions bottled up for months, but now, they were all pouring out. “What's this all about?”

"Y-you and your friends are so good at so many things! Human things! Cooking, computers, engineering..." you say, feeling the tears flow more freely now. "I r-really want to be like your friends, but I just can't figure any of it out! I'm j-just a Pokémon..."

“Come on, Kiyota. You know better than that,” Sakuma said, obviously a little taken aback that you felt that way. “You’re not ‘just a Pokémon”. You’re my best friend, and you can do anything you set your mind to. There’s plenty of things you’re better than me at, after all.”

You blink. "Y-you really think so?"

“Of course. Different people are good at different things. Nothing wrong with that,” Sakuma smiled, and you smiled back a little. He gazed over at the burnt mess that was lying on the floor. “Now what were you trying to make, here? Some galettes?”

"Yeah..." you nod, a bit ashamed.

“Tell you what. Why don’t we cook something up together? I can give you a few pointers,” Sakuma offered, and smiled so warmly you couldn’t help but smile back. “Then we can have a nice dinner together. After all, if you wanted to hang out all this time, you could’ve just asked.”

You dry your face with your paw, realizing how silly you had been. Of course Sakuma cared for you. You WERE one of his real friends, and you have been for years. Just because you’re a Pokémon… that doesn’t change anything. "That sounds… perfect," you reply with a grin.
