Mike was awoken by the cry of his alarm clock. After smashing it into silence, he rolled over in his bed until he stared at the roof. It was late in the morning, he realized by looking at the bright light coming through his window. When he looked at the clock he just abused a minute ago, his suspicion was confirmed; it was about ten O' clock, and the day was beginning.
But Mike didn't care, for it was the first day of the summer vacation: no teachers, no homework, and no getting up early for school. Hell, there was even a chance that his father might spend some time with him today, like he always promised. After laying lazily in his bed for a while, he finally mustered the strength to rise from his mattress. Very sluggishly he moved to one side of his room, opened his door, and made his way downstairs towards the kitchen.
But as soon as he arrived, he was greeted by deathly silence. A few dishes and a pan lied in the sink, the only evidence that Mike's father was long up before him. There was a note on the table. Without even reading it, Mike gave a disappointed sigh, strolled over to the sink, washed the few dishes, and started to make breakfast for himself.
As he was eating - a meal that mainly consisted of bacon bits mixed with scrambled eggs - he wondered if there would ever be a day that his dad wouldn't have to run off to his workplace, where he worked as a CEO for an insurance company. For the last three years Mike spend most of his time alone. Other teenagers would rejoice, take the freedom to do whatever they wanted, but not him.
