Chapter #6

A Mare For A Mare

    by: Gator Author IconMail Icon
To your displeasure, Amber, the colleague you had made the deal with, is waiting for you outside, standing at the bottom of the wooden porch’s trio of stairs. Your eyes lock with her emerald ones as you open the front door, and as your frown bloats and sinks deeper, her smile grows and rises higher, as if drawing in all the energy your face has shed to the warm summer air. She greets you with a wave.

“Morning!” She greets with a playful tilt of the head, swaying strands of her long, jet black hair. “Remember out arrangement, yeah?

You sigh, “I remember.” It takes a deep breath and a hard swallow to grumble out the following words, “Jackie’s yours today, as agreed.”

Her smile blossoms into a thin grin, revealing a line of perfect white teeth, “Sweet! I promise to take good care of her. And you’ll take good care of my horse, right?

Again, you sigh, “Yes, Amber. I’ll take good care of ___.”

[Starlight: A young, classic-gold palomino mare. An in-training show mare. Incredibly shy and cautious around near everyone and everything, she can make simple things extremely tedious for her handlers – who must also take great care to not have her flee in fear.]

[Delilah: A Shire Horse with a black coat and white markings. Another of the riding horses, and the largest, as well as heaviest, horse on the entire farm. Well-mannered, but commonly gets lost in her daydreams to the point of often bumping into things or causing accidents – usually to her handlers.]

[Vixen: A chestnut Appaloosa with a blanket of white fur over her hip area. Now retired, but was once the farm’s most acclaimed show-horse – until Glitter came along. Shows some signs of aging and is a little chubby, but still decently-built. Prideful and bossy, she seems to take her insanely jealous at her more successful successor out on her handlers.]

[Garnet: A new mare you’ve never seen yourself, but you’ve heard rumors that she has more “human-like” features – whatever that entails…]
