There would be time enough to fall from the cliff later, for now, he would stick to the larger path. He had climbed many trees as a child but falling from ten feet and falling from over a hundred were very different things. The sound of falling stones could be heard clattering against other rocks, mostly they were smaller but a few were more than large enough to crush a man even one in metal armor. The people that worked the mountain truly earned their keep.
He came around the bend in the trail to discover a small group of guards stepped forward into his path. They wore symbols that he didn’t recognize but it was obvious that they were a unified force who had no intention of allowing him to move any further along the path but he had no intention to be stopped without good cause.
“I have reason to head up the mountain and need to pass,” Sir Garrett resisted the urge to draw his blade despite them having their swords at the ready. They may have been part of an organized force but their movement betrayed their inexperience. He could see how nervous they were against him even though they out numbered him five to one. There was a tremble to their blades that told they were frightened of him.
“No one is going up the mountain this week,” a calmer man stepped forward with an air of some authority calming the others. “We are doing some trail work to clear, you can come up here next week when the work is done.”
The words seemed reasonable but there was a hint of dishonesty to what the man said. He didn’t recognize their uniforms and he didn’t know of any of the local nobles who cared enough about the safety of their peasants to take care of the trails. It was tempting to let this pass and continue on his journey but lies didn’t sit well with him. These people were likely up to things they shouldn’t be and if they were doing wrong he would put a stop to them even if he was out numbered.
“I think you should be honest about what you are doing up here because I am not leaving otherwise and you will find me a hard target,” Sir Garrett drew his sword and prepared for combat.
