Chapter #5

Trust the King

    by: bolgerjc Author IconMail Icon
Eric decided he would trust King Emeril because the man had yet to wrong him and he believed in trusting his friends. A shaman may read more into the dream but a berserker lived more in the real world. Dreams were often just silly random thoughts and images, he had yet to become a purple dragon with yellow spots like he had dreamed about once. He had a mission to do and a reward to get. If the King did betray him he would soon find an ax in his head.

The trouble with the tribes was likely to have been caused by the orcs. Orcs were far closer to tribes than the civilized world and they often met on friendly terms for trade and mating but they were known to call for war every chance they got. Yargas was a god loved by many barbarians and was often used to exploit the emotions of the tribe into joining them on violent raids. If he could find the orc war leader he could end this by slaying the being.

It was a signs the gods were not with you when your war leader was slain so Eric would do his best to locate him. Finding the war leader shouldn’t be very hard because they would be calling everyone to them to get them ready for war. The problem would be in getting to the leader because he would be surrounded by bodyguards so he wouldn’t have to fight with every crazy who wanted to challenge him. Depending on how defensive the person was, Eric may have to fight many people before he could challenge the leader to combat. This, of course, depended on the war leader being honorable but if he was wasn’t it was likely the other would leave him especially the worshipers of Yargas if he acted with dishonor. That would be cold comfort to Eric’s loved ones when they were given his corpse if it came to that.

Trailing the orcs back to where they had come from seemed like the simplest solutions. If he traveled in the open he was more likely to be viewed as either a proper challenger or someone looking to join the war leader. If he traveled with more stealth he could avoid these small pockets of violent enemies. Whatever he did, Eric was sure that the spirit of the Wolverine inside of him would be well fed over the next several days.
