When Dawn arrived at the University of California, she had no interest in joining a sorority. In fact, it was only with a lot of mental preparation that she had an interest in college. Some inspirational words from her sister changed that. Buffy was the selfless warrior that Dawn always looked up to, even during the resentful bouts of sibling rivalry. And only as Dawn grew older did she realize that she didn't have to literally punch demons out to help Buffy in her mission. She would have to do it in a less physical way, like Giles or Xander or any of the other normals among the evil-fighting squad she grew up with.
She wasn't quite sure what major would help her the most in that, but getting into a college was a start.
Her friend Tiffany from the now defunct Sunnydale High School was the only one on campus she knew, and that was good enough for her. Dawn wasn't yet interested in any of the social aspects of college. Tiffany was, though, and so any socializing Dawn needed could be gotten through her. But a sorority? No, that was out of the question. Dawn was part of the popular crowd and that wasn't going to change now.
"We have to join a sorority," Tiffany said.
"Why? We don't have to pay people to be our friends," Dawn said.
"Dawn, come on, they have the best parties," Tiffany said, already realizing that wouldn't intrigue her more studious friend. "Look, we can both get into Kappa Phi Delta Gamma."
"KPDG?" Dawn said with a sneer, "Aren't they like the super model sorority were everybody is all super thin and hot?"
Tiffany nodded her head.
"Yeah, like you! And kind of me," she said, hoping to appeal to Dawn's vanity, at least.
"Ugh, no thanks," Dawn said. She turned her head towards a table in the school cafeteria, which looked more like a mall's food court with its ring of fast food places surrounding the tables. A few Kappas were there, all gorgeous, all with perfect figures and hair. Dawn noticed them only because this sorority seemed dedicated to only admitting the hottest of the hot, for no reason other than keeping their beauty quotient high, apparently.
Actually, now that she looked at them, it was somewhat uncanny how absolute beautiful all the girls in that house were . . .
"But, like, they're not just about being hot," Tiffany went on, "They're kind of like, um . . . Freemasons. Yeah, they do occult research and stuff, too."
Dawn cocked an eyebrow in disbelief.
"Yeah, right. They look like a bunch of airheads to me."
"But you love that weird magic stuff, right? And they have books and a library and everything in their house."
"Really?" this actually intrigued Dawn.
"Well, I haven't seen it. But Amber Jameson told me they're into all that, and that they have crazy resources."
"Well, I don't know," Dawn said, now so obviously intrigued that Tiffany knew it was only a matter of time. "Why don't you join and tell me how it is and then we'll see?"
"I can't, I don't . . . think I'm pretty enough. But you are. And anyways, I don't to be in there without any friends. If we both join and they let us in then it'll be way better."
"I'll think about it. But if they don't accept you then I won't join," Dawn said, indicating that she had already thought about it.
"Okay!" Tiffany said, grabbing her friend's hands in excitement.
They turned and saw the Kappas again, chowing down on their burgers, pizza, grilled chicken, the worst of the unhealthy foods this cafeteria had to offer.
"Ugh, how do they stay so thin?" Dawn asked, who had never had a problem keeping her figure ever since she developed into the slender, beautiful girl she was today.
"That's probably one of their secrets," Tiffany said with a thoughtful nod. She didn't really know much about what goes on this or any sorority, but assumed secrets were part of it.
