“And now light the candles,” Rose muttered to herself as she took the taper around to each of the candles around the black chalk shape she had drawn on the floor.
With that finished, she went back to the book she had found in that odd little store she occasionally went to. Tucking a loose lock of her crimson hair behind her ear, she went over the faded and worn text in the tome.
It had been mere happenstance that she had found the book, or it found her considering that it had tumbled off the top of the shelf when she put something else back. Considering the wave of dust that came down with the book, it had obviously been tucked away up there for an extremely long time. The rotund redhead hadn’t been able to make out much of the text, but what little bit she could read made the book seem like it contained spells, rituals, and the like. Scoffing, she almost put the book back when one particular section caught her eye. Like the rest, it was hard to read, but what she could make out seem to mention things like “change one’s life” as well as she thought had to be repeated references to pregnancy. Just the chance of that was enough to convince her to purchase the book and head home to see about it.
She had always been attracted to the idea of pregnancy – just the thought of her mother pregnant with her twin siblings during her own childhood bought a smile to Rose’s face – and now this book might be just what she needed. It had taken her several weeks to get all of the materials the ritual required, but now it was finally time to give it a shot. Grabbing a knife she took from her kitchen, she walked to the design on the floor, and winced as she pricked her finger and squeezed out several drops of blood into the center. Sucking the minor wound, she put the knife back down and picked up the book. Rose then started to read out the chant, it was choppy and halting at first, but after several passes through it was smoother and quicker. The chant was gibberish to her ears, but on the fifth pass she thought she felt a slight breeze despite there being no source. On the next loop, it almost looked like there was a pale glow from the supposedly ordinary chalk. It was on the seventh run through where all heck broke loose.
