Chapter #10

You gotta friend in need

    by: Trampltrum Author IconMail Icon
In her fuming state Cerys was blissfully unaware that as she grabbed from the *healthy* buffet spread, she was mimicking the fat girl in front of her move for move. Every chicken wing or spoonful of pasta she grabbed Cerys copied; not deliberately of course, her mind was just…elsewhere. Ugh, that Grace, horribly nasty trollup! Thinks just because she has a face like a movie-star and a body like a sumo she can push her around? Ooooo the nerve!

Unfortunately Cerys was so preoccupied with her furious mental state she was totally unaware that the girl in front had stopped to double-up on the final wave of desserts, meaning the grumpy goth’s cheek was suddenly met with a great wall of back fat.

“Hey watch it!” the owner of said fat snapped at the sudden accidental groping.

“Sorry” Cerys grumbled as she peeled herself from the behemoth, before exiting the line and suddenly realizing how much she had taken. This was WAY more than what Cerys normally ate, but who cared! She was in a bad mood and needed some comfort food.

As the lanky goth scanned her environment for a nice empty bench where she could sit and vent her temper only continued to rise. God there were so many girls taking up entire rows of benches for themselves, go on a diet you fat lumps! Ugh!

Spying a table to her left, Cerys made short work of the distance, her long legs swiftly guiding her to her target. But as she was about to place her tray down and tuck in, Cerys saw something out of the corner of her eye.

It was a small figure, most likely a freshman, sitting alone and hunched over. Cursing her kind nature, Cerys puffed a jet of air from her lips and stood back up, joining the smaller girl. *Sigh* Why did she have to be a nice person?

“Hey, this seat free?” Cerys asked, making sure her hunch was right.

“Huh? Yeah…sure” the girl huffed, slumping her head into her crossed arms, “*Sniff* Whatever.”

“Are you alright?” Cerys pried, leaning towards the huddled figure.

“Why wouldn’t I be?” the girl mumbled into her elbow.

“Because you were crying…” Cerys stated rather bluntly but quietly.

“You saw that? *Sniff* Crud” at this the freshman pushed her hand behind her glasses and wiped the sides of her face, trying her best to remove the glistening droplets.

“Hey, its ok, do you want to tell me what’s wrong?” Cerys asked, putting on the sweetest voice possible.

“I just…this place; it’s all so big, I nearly got lost, I don’t know anybody here, oh! And the sweater my mom made for me got caught on a hook…I just…can’t take this all at once *sniff*” at this the girl suddenly stopped and looked straight at Cerys, “Hey! Why am I telling you this? I don’t even know who you are?”

“I’m Cerys, Cerys Porter, and I guess I just have one of those faces” Cerys replied with a warm smile.

“Julia Winters; I was hoping to start this school year right, not get a rep as some big baby who cried on the first day” the girl moped.

“Hey, nobody saw you, here…” Cerys picked up one of the white napkins from her tray and handed them to Julia, “Now nobody will know.”

“Thanks *sniff*” Julia replied as she tidied herself up before letting out a long breath. Now more relaxed, Cerys could get a good look at her.

Julia was a little below average height for a freshman, with dark brown skin and freckles covering her cheeks. She had plain rectangular glasses, brown eyes and her curly black hair was done up in an afro that draped over either side of her head.

“If it makes you feel better, I haven’t exactly been having a good day myself” Cerys told her new friend, “And I did not exactly have many friends around here when I started myself.”

“Really? What happened?” Julia asked as Cerys began to explain Grace, the welcome baskets, the name-calling and how she felt during her own freshmen year. All the while both girls picked at Cerys’s tray, the massive pile of food falling lower and lower.

In return Julia explained a bit more about herself. Like how she used to be the most popular girl in school…and how it was not all it was cracked up to be.

“I got good grades, my parents were proud of me, I was class president, and people assumed I was going to be a cheerleader when I got to Buttercombe…but it was hard” Julia elaborated. “Everyone thought I was some kind of beauty-queen genius but it took so much study and endless hours in front of a mirror making sure I looked good…I was a wreck at the end of the day...but at least nobody saw that side of me…I…I don’t think I ever had any real friends there”

Cerys felt bad for the poor girl. Julia obviously had self-esteem issues, and arriving at a new school had pushed her pretty hard. As the goth listened she felt a warm feeling well up in her chest; this poor girl, so lonely and afraid; Cerys HAD to protect her…what if someone like Grace got her flabby hands on her? That would break the poor girl.

“Well, if it makes you feel any better, you have a friend now” Cerys smiled; that seemed to cheer Julia up.

The pair ceased chatting as a set of loud footsteps echoed through the hall, as a plump blonde woman took to the stage. It was Headmistress Polluck.

“That’s Ms Polluck” Cerys whispered, “She…”

“I know” Julia whispered back, cutting Cerys off, “I met her when I enrolled, I am not a total newbie”

As they watched with rapt attention, Ms Polluck introduced herself, talked about the grand history of Buttercombe Academy and introduced the new teachers one by one.

“Thank you Ms Walker” Shannon Polluck added after the final teacher introduced herself, “Now I have nothing more to say then study hard and bee the best you can be!” Ms Polluck laughed a little at her own joke before wiggling her way off the podium; her pencil-skirt was becoming a little more restrictive lately…

“Well, that wraps that up” Cerys stated flatly, she was used to Ms Polluck’s speeches by now, “You want to hang around here some more?”
