Not Alone

Arzil and Kaleil jumped up, looking around wildly for the source of that noise. Kaleil lifted the sunstone, trying to provide as much light as he could, but the shadows it threw everywhere made it difficult to--

"What was that?!" Arzil whispered, pointing his finger out towards a direction where he thought he saw movement.

The cavern was silent for a moment, but both boys soon made out the sound of heavy footsteps, slowly getting closer.

"I don't know," Kaleil whispered back, "but whatever it is, it's probably not friendly." He reached to his hip where his pocketblade was hanging, his hand trembling as he unfolded it.

"Do you think it's Inquisitors?" Arzil asked, trembling more and more as the footsteps got closer.

"It sounds much bigger than that," Kaleil said, shaking his head. "And it's coming from the back of the cave. Whatever it is, it's not human." He took a deep breath. "We need to get out of here."

The two boys turned to start fleeing, but were stopped when they heard the sound of a voice, low and booming. "Don't be afraid. I'm not here to hurt you."

The two stopped, hesitant whether or not to trust the voice. Braving his fears, Kaleil turned around, holding up his sunstone again. This time, the outline of a figure was clearly visible, though the details were still shrouded in the darkness. But it's size… whatever it was, it was huge, at least twelve feet tall.

"By the blood of the stones," the voice said, sounding surprised , "you're-- you're human. I thought humans had been extinct for centuries."

Kaleil was taken aback at this. "Extinct? What? There's a citydome of over four hundred million of us less than ten miles from here."

The figure paused before responding, "Amazing. Simply amazing."

By this time, Arzil had turned around as well. "W-who -- or what -- are you?"

In response, the figure stepped forward, moving closer to the light. This made it easier to make out what kind of creature they were speaking to. As far as they could tell, the large figure was…
