Two teenage friends, a few years apart

"Do you think they'll be able to hear us?" Arzil asked. The thirteen year old boy brushed the long, blonde strands of hair out of his eyes, looking up at his older friend's face hopefully.

"Not as long as we keep our voice down," Kaleil replied. "Let's go a little deeper into the cave, though, just to be safe."

He motioned with his hand, and Arzil followed as they carefully walked along the cave floor, watching out for any signs of wild animals -- or worse, human activity. So far, the cave appeared to be deserted.

Once they had gotten a good hundred feet or so from the entrance, Kaleil stopped. "That should be far enough," he said, having a seat on a large outcropping of rock. He pulled his sunstone from his pocket. It was weak and didn't provide enough light to fill the cavern like it would have if it had been fully charged, but it was more than enough to make it through the night safely. And, he reasoned, the less light they had, the less likely someone would spot them from the outside.

"Ugghh..." Arzil sighed as he sat, then lied down on the rock next to Kaleil. "This has been quite a day. First, I find that my parents have been arrested for treason, then I just escape getting caught myself. I'm lucky that you came along when you did, Kaleil."

"Hey," the fifteen year old shrugged, smiling, "how could I let my best friend just get locked away in jail like that? I'd miss you so much that I would just have to break you out."

"Well, I'm glad you don't have to worry about that." Arzil leaned back against Kaleil, his head resting against Kaleil's shoulder for a moment, until Kaleil repositioned himself and allowed Arzil to lie down with his head in his lap. "I'd know you could do it, though."

"Heheh, yeah, probably." Arzil smiled as he looked into Kaleil's eyes, thankful that, after all that they'd gone through today, things finally seemed to be quieting down.
