Since it was late at night, most of the townsfolk had gone to bed, so Kyra wandered into one of the few places that was still open. It was a quaint little tavern, full of adorable, drunk villagers with their faces covered in scars and scowls. Of course, after they saw the attractive young princess step inside, their scowls turning into smiles. A more experienced woman might have called them leers, but it was all the same to Kyra.
"Welcome, welcome!" the portly innkeeper said warmly. He was a bald man with a rotund figure, but he seemed friendly enough. Another might consider him too friendly as he led her into his establishment, his hand a bit too low on her shapely hip. "Come in, warm yourself up, have a drink!"
Kyra smiled and looked around. She had never been in a tavern before, but she had heard stories about them. She couldn't remember how many times a group of adventurers met in a tavern and went off and … adventured. She was never sure what an adventure was, exactly, but often it involved a dragon or a princess or a princess held captive by a dragon. In any case, it seemed like good fun.
She wasn't sure she was dressed for visiting a tavern in a white fluffy bathrobe and white slippers, but judging by the looks of the other inhabitants, no one disapproved of her attire, so she made sure that the cloth belt was tied firmly around her waist and sat down at a table.
"Um, a drink?" Her father had always been strict about her and alcohol … but he wasn't here with her. "I'll have a glass of wine, please."
The barkeep poured her a glass of something red and tart, and she smiled to herself as she sipped it. She realized that she was in the place were adventures usually began, and hers was just beginning.
