Main Characters Mark Taylor: The main character. A 28-year-old researcher for Protean Industries. An accident at his lab changes Mark's life forever... Jillian Harding: Mark's research partner and girlfriend. 25-year-old former child prodigy who previously worked for the military. Creator of the compound SX-2 and its successor SX-3.
Fort Suffolk: Lt. Claire Briggs: 26-years-old. Good friend of Jillian Harding. A consumate and professional soldier, she's very respected among the base personnel.
Protean Thom Allan: A non-descript accountant for Protean living a boring, unfulfilling life. Married with two children. Levi Rosenstein: The director of research for Protean. A rather unsettling individual. Chip Henklemann: Former police officer who was "retired" after an injury. Is now Chief of Security for Protean.
Keyserling College: Darcy Whitehead: 19-year-old freshman and graduate of Eastman High. Attends classes at the college while interning at Protean Industries, mainly as an assistant to Jillian Harding. Summer Nguyen: 19-year-old arts major and former shrinking violet who has become friends with Darcy. Works part time at a small, nearby cofee shop. Courtney Hamilton: Another Eastman graduate. Friend and co-worker of Summer's at the coffee shop. Rhonda Turner: A sophomore at Keyserling; Summer's girlfriend. The two of them live together in an apartment off campus.
Other David Johnson: Formerly a senior at Eastman. An accident at the military base Fort Suffolk turned him into a creature able to possess and control others. Seemingly disappeared soon afterwards. Karin Allan: Thom's wife, a transplant from New York. Though her looks have faded she still remains shallow and self-absorbed. Chels Snythe: Formerly Chelsea Cooper and formerly the head cheerleader at Westside High School. Moved to L.A. to become an actress and changed her name but has since returned to Saratoga Falls while on a shooting break.
