He doesn’t believe her and takes her to t...

"Sorry," the officer says. "That's either a great crazy story, or a terrible lie. Either way, I have to take you in."

He put her in the back of his patrol car. Then he got a blanket out of the trunk and covered her with it. "You can wear that for now," he said.

Lauren was pleased to see that the jail, when they reached it, wasn't particularly crowded. The officer guided her inside, sat her in a chair, and started booking her.

"Name?"

She gave him her name, and all the other information he asked for.

When the booking process was completed, he said, "Now I'll let you have your one phone call."

Great, Lauren thought. I can call Dad.

Later, the officer put Lauren, still wrapped in the blanket but no longer handcuffed, into a cell. "You'll stay here until someone comes to bail you out, or you appear in front of the judge," he said.

Then he left.

Lauren looked around the cell.
