Ryan woke with a start. What was that noise? A thunder storm. The sun wasn't even up. He checked the time. 3:30. He groaned and turned over. Another rumble and Ryan realized that is was his belly- and that he was hungry. "Amazing," he thought.
He tried to go back to sleep but the rumbling continues and Ryan finally got up and went down to the kitchen to get something to eat.
Food had never been important to Ryan. It was just something that happened. His mother always encouraged him to eat breakfast before school but he usually just nibbled. Now his belly was telling him that it needed to be filled and wasn't going to settle for nibbled or be ignored. He'd never cooked anything in his life, didn't know how to start but maybe he could make some toast.
Two slices of buttered toast later, it seemed that the emergency was past. The rumbling stopped and so had the hunger pangs. But curiously Ryan didn't go back to bed. Instead he
