James awoke nearly an hour later to find himself in a sitting position surrounded by a bright but soft light. A light moan escaped his lips, feeling a bit weak and dizzy but otherwise well. Slowly, his memory returned to him and he recalled being shot, trying to save a winged girl from three men who were attacking her. James shed a single tear, thinking about the young girl and wondered if she was safe. As his eyes became accustomed to the light, he looked up to see a strange vaulted ceiling.
"Where am I?" he weakly asked, aloud.

James tried to move but his body was slow to respond. A hand gently touched his shoulder and guided him to a position where he looked down and gasped, becoming fully awake. "What!?..."

James pushed himself back, away from the edge of the bed he was sitting on, panic clear on his face until he heard a a giggle, followed by a familiar feminine voice. "Be at peace, young Misterian." she said. "Although you can see down to the Earth, I assure you that there is a solid floor between you and the sky."
James, still alarmed, looked up to see the young winged girl he had tried to rescue, standing on what seemed to be a thick glass surface. Seeing his reluctance, the girl smiled kindly at him before urging him to stand. He did so, hesitantly and was relieved that there was indeed a floor holding him up. "Misterian?" you asked confused. "Am I dead, is this heaven or...?"
The girl laughed, it was sweet and melodious. "No, you are not dead and this is not what you call heaven." she replied. "My name is Myrrh, crown princess to the kingdom of Skyaira." she blushed slightly. "Thank you for coming to my rescue, my mother and I are most grateful."
"You're welcome." replied James, still in a bit of shock. "I... seem to recall being shot."
Myrrh nodded. "You were bleeding very badly." she replied. "There was little time, you were very close to death, my mother performed an induction ritual."
"What is that?" asked James.
Myrrh sighed. "It's complicated but, basically, she used a part of her own life force to rebuild or reshape your body." she explained. "You are now one of us, a young Misterian." she then winced. "Only, there is a certain randomness involved in which mom had no control over."
"Randomness?" asked James, his head beginning to spin.
Myrrh nodded and motioned to a reflective portion of the wall. "You may want to prepare yourself." she said.
Shaking, James looked into the mirror and screamed as he saw that he was now...
