Katie put her car in gear and drove to the nearest pawn shop she knew of. She entered and presented the statue to the desk worker,

"This is an item from the Luckmann estate, can you tell me how much it's worth?" She asked the man.

"If it's from the Luckmann's, I ain't touching it, it's probably hot." He replied gruffly

"Wha- no! It was given to the lady that runs the curio shop on main, and I bought it from her today."

"Look lady, I don't trust that, and I don't trust you. Quit trying to sell stolen goods here." Katie huffed and left. Returning to her car and looking up another pawn shop. On her way there, she almost stopped for food, despite not being very hungry. She paid no mind to this as she arrived at the next store. It went much the same, telling the employee the statue was from the Luckmann estate and them assuming it was stolen. She tried a third, this time omitting that it was from Luckmann's.

"...it's from my grandparent's estate, just hiding in a cabinet." She lied.

She caved this time and stopped at a local fast-food place and got a large order of fries, finishing them before arriving at the antique store. She took a breath to calm herself, then entered.

"Excuse me, can you give an appraisal on an item?" She asked the elderly clerk

"Hm? Oh, absolutely. Do you have it with you or-- oh, is it in the-ah, the bag?" He put on a pair of reading glasses as Katie showed him the statue. He gently took it, getting out one of those head mounted magnifiers and looked over it. "Hmm, yes yes, I see." He looked at the bottom, at the top, inspected the gold leaf, everything. He set it down carefully and looked at Katie

"Well?" She asked excitedly

"It's old."

"I knew that"

"Yes, well, there isn't much else I can tell you about it. Try taking it to an ancient history museum."

"Is there one in town?" Katie asked, a bit exasperated

"Over on the square, behind the courthouse." He replied, "sorry I can't help much more, my expertise rest on things made in the 19th century."

"Well, thank you anyway." Katie told him as she left. She went back to her car, set the statue down, and sighed. "Why are you so difficult to deal with?" She looked at the statue, then covered it as she felt it stare back. She put the key in the ignition and...
