Lauren ordered a book with spells, ... by: Apollo   Among the things she found was a book called Imperium: Homo Hominis, Bestia, ac Magis, which claimed to be "the essential guide for those looking to manipulate the world around them." Lauren was skeptical at first, but it offered a free download of one page with a translation: a spell on how to levitate things in midair. Lauren downloaded the page, and by saying the words, was able to make her heart race as she made her school books rotate around her like the planets around the sun. She could hardly wait to see what the rest of the book offered, so she shoveled out a little extra for a one day rushed delivery.
The day after, she found a box waiting for her in the mail. With the box securely held in her arms, Lauren ran up the stairs, too excited to even wait for the elevator. Once in, Lauren tore the box apart like a kid opening Christmas gifts, unconcerned about the mess she was causing. The books he order was riddled with crinkled pages and was bound with a faded and worn leather cover. Her racing heart reminded her how much she wanted to tear the book open and have at it, but its condition and Lauren's sensibility won out. Lauren carefully opens the front cover, but finds herself blinded by dust. She quickly makes her way to the bathroom to wash her eyes out, but the stinging and crusty bits that were irritating her eyes a moment ago suddenly vanished. Lauren heads back to the book, trying to put the dust behind her, as she stumbles upon a note written on a fresh, separate piece of paper in the book, secured by a paper clip. The note read:
Congratulations on your purchase, young witch/wizard. This book has served many people who rose to great power of the years, but it holds with it one flaw: it's all Latin. However, this is no longer a problem. The dust that sprayed you when you opened the cover will allow you to read Latin as if it was English. For proof, go see the download of the original page you got before ordering. However, be careful who you show this book to. The dust is a permanent effect infused into the book that will attack anyone, allowing anyone to use its power against you.
The note was unsigned, but it quickly gave Lauren hope. As it predicted, the downloaded page she previously couldn't make heads or tails of was easily legible. Lauren quickly skimmed the book, finding more options than she had hoped for. Spells to make a person a slave, spells to make items invisible, a "how to" on voodoo dolls, and how to make items disappear or change into something else.
Lauren found so many options so fast and wanted to act quickly, her eyes bugging out with each new page she read. However, she took a break. "Start small," she mumbled to herself.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
