Howard came back to consciousness slowly, the first thing being was aware of was his breathing and with it, irritation. There was a mild pain in his breath and he didn't know why. The confusion stayed with him as he began to see his surroundings. In the distance Howard could just make out the sound of chirping that he finally realized were crickets which was mixed in with a light ringing in his ears.
He moved his arms and felt his neck, which felt tender but he didn't know why. That's when it all came back to him. The deer. The car. He slowly opened his eyes and saw that he was still in the car but he wasn't in the driver's seat.
He tried to get his he straight but it felt fuzzy. What was wrong with the car? Something was off. He looked around and with some effort, he was able to pull himself up. He climbed up out of the driver side window and slid out of the car.
Howard took the scene in. His car had landed in a ditch and flipped to its side. He didn't know if it was in that order or not. One of the headlights was still on, shining into the woods which showed something glinting in the light.
Howard walked over to it, distant in his thoughts. The glinting was the zipper of his backpack surrounded by broken glass. He picked it up at tossed it over his shoulder.
Broken glass...Howard looked down at himself. He knew he should be concerned but he really wasn't. It was like he was watching himself as an outside observer. He checked himself over, looking for blood. He didn't find any, nor did he find any cuts or rips. If he was in his right mind, he would have considered himself lucky that all that seemed to hurt was his throat and head...his head hurt?
Not knowing what to do, he picked a direction and started walking.
