Danieru had signed up for an international program which called for American children to spend the long December holidays under the care of foreign foster parents. It was a UN-peacekeeping initiative sponsored by many American HighSchool's in an action to preserve world peace as well as an opportunity learn about the diverse cultures from around the globe.
Children of all ages could volunteer for this and were tasked with writing a report of their experiences under the guardianship of their culturally different parents, and what they had learned from their homeland. Those writing the most oustanding report would win a prize equal to a quarter million dollars for their school.
But Danieru wasn't interested in all that. He was merely bored. All his friend had planned grand vacations which wold see them leaving his home town and Danieru alone. He refused to spend a month of vacation in isolation and boredom.
But what really convinced him to sign up for the program, was a secret he kept hidden from all his closest of fiends.
He was an orphan. Since birth. He'd kept this hidden from all who asked. He slaved away during highschool working as a pizza-delivery boy to pay for his own school-tuition. The manager took pity on him and gave him a small apartment in which he lived. It was a dump, but it was warm and out of the weather and free. The manager being kind, also agreed to pay for Danieru's school-tuition instead of giving him a salary, a significantly larger amount of money. So he basically worked to have the right to go to school. But Danieru refused to go back to the orphanage and the poverty that came along with it.
The idea of having parents, even if they were temporary foreign exchange parents, brought a warm feeling to Danieru. It was obvious for him to sign up for the program. Plus he could escape his crappy apartment for a whole month.
There were parents from every nation requesting children from America to join them for the holidays. Germany, the Netherlands, South Africa, Britain, everywhere. But Danieru went straight for the Land of the Rising Sun: Japan.
An avid fan of Anime and all Nintendo and Sony games, Danieru was also fascinated by the Japanese. He always wondered how Sake and sushi tasted. Now was his chance.
He found the request of a beautiful Japanese woman who spoke English clearly and decently, but with a thick accent. The requests were in folders containing tape-recorders pictures and letters, where the parents requested what type of children they preferred to have staying with them. The woman's name was Nemu Anaki, and she had requested the company of a boy around 16-years of age.
Danieru fit that description perfectly and applied for her immediately.
His flight ticket was paid for by the UN, and 12 hours of flying later, Danieru touched Jap soil and met his new foster mother.
He could tell she was as excited for having him stay with her, as he was with her.
When they came to the parking lot, Danieru could see immediately that Nemu was exceedingly wealthy. Her car was a bloody Ferrari! From poverty, Danieru could only have dreamed of the chance to touch one, let alone ride.
He had the happy suspicion that his stay would be an exciting one. Little did he know just how much.
