"Garnet, Professor Hickory told me to tell you that she has a Pokemon for your birthday tomorrow." Garnet's mother said as she packed his bag for his up coming journey. Garnet grabbed some tea out the refrigerator. "Alright, your bag is packed. Don't forget your Pokedex, badge case, goggles, and extra clothes." Garnet's mother said as she handed him a list. "I know mom," Garnet growled as he headed toward his room.
As he claimed the stairs, he slowly began to feel the excitement well up in his chest. After all this time, he was finally going to be able to become a Pokemon trainer! He jumped up into his room, fist pumping the whole way up. He grinned, glancing out his window to snag a quick view of the Pokemon Laboratory. Just a few more hours and I can finally leave this crappy town... he thought to himself. Well, not completely crappy... He couldn't help but grin, spotting his neighbor, Amethyst, outside playing with her little brother and their pet Eevee.
Garnet and Amethyst had been neighbors for as long as he could remember. The two of them never seemed to get along, but Garnet had always secretly admired her for some reason, despite the frequent name calling and abusive actions he received from her. The two of them would be starting their Pokemon journey at the same time, and that made him happy. In a way, it made him happy that the Professor had received those budget cuts and delayed his journey.

With the blaring of an alarm, Garnet awoke, jumping suddenly from his bed. He winced, as he had once again been sleeping in an awkward position. He sluggishly grabbed his bag and trudged down stairs, making his way outside to the Professor's lab.
He said goodbye to his mother and exited his house, running into Amethyst. They both collapsed to the ground with a thud.
