Chapter #3

Changes at work

    by: Norman33 Author IconMail Icon
Brad made it to work and the office was all a buzz. Seems that they just hired a new guy named Mark Hartman away from another company. Brad had heard of Mark. He was good, to good in fact. Brad makes his way up to his office to find that they had given Mark the office right next to his. It was one that Brad had his own a year ago, but it was occupied by Jennings then. It had a better view and 10 square feet more room. 10 square feet may seem trivial, but Brad gets steamed just the same. This Mark is competition. Brad recognizes the type and well he should. He sees the same thing when he looks in the mirror. Brad checks his e-mails and then heads up to the conference room. When he gets there Mark is already kissing up to the old man. Brad says a little mantra to settle himself down before walking over for an introduction. "Hello Brad, I want you to meet the newest member of the team. This is Mark Hartman we just stole him away from Sands", The old man says. Brad takes his hand and sizes him up. Mark does the same. Brad feels the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. It's what happens when one predator meets another. "This man is a threat", Brad thinks to himself while shaking Mark's hand and saying, "Welcome to the team. I'm looking forward to working with you, Mark. We run things a little different here than at Sands. I'll be glad to help show you around, give you a helping hand". Mark recognizing that statement as an insult responds with, "I think I'll be ok. I've studied the company's mission statement, financials, business plan, and just about everything else a few months ago when I worked for Sands. It was when we were both bidding for the Kraft project. I was the one that got the bid for Sands. If I remember right you put the other proposal". Brad's face turns red. Mark has just thrown down the glove. The old man intervenes saying, "Now boys, that's in the past. We're all on the same team now". Brad backs down, smiles, and says, "You're right Walter. Mark the offer still stands, If you need anything just let me know".

The meeting is routine. Afterwards Brad returns to his office. He looks back at the Kraft proposal and realizes Mark is real good. "I need to take this son of a bitch out, or find something to give me an edge over him", Brad mumbles to himself. Brad decides to.............

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Take Mark out

2. Give himself an edge

*Noteb*
3. Other, maybe switch to Mark's point of view

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
