This choice: Each time a team scores a goal, they grow a foot. • Go Back... The boys are pretty good for their age, and you're impressed by their skills and athleticism. An olive-skin Asian boy on the "skins" team seems to be the superstar of the group. After a while, you pick up from the other boys' chatter that his name is Lee. He has a more toned body than the rest of the group, making him look a little closer to being a teenager. Lee's all over the field, playing both defense and offense with a passion.
After a particularly well-executed slide-tackle, he passes to a blonde-haired teammate, then rushes up the field. "Lee's breaking free!" Jordan yells to the blonde-haired boy, who sees this and kicks the ball in a long, arching pass, right to Lee, who is in the perfect position to knock it towards the goal, past the outstretched fingertips of the other team's goalie and into the net.
The "skins" team cheers, coming together and high-fiving each other, while the "shirts" team looks a little saddened but determined to strike back.
After celebrating with his team, Lee says, "All right, guys, are you ready?"
"Yeah!" they answer in unison, all linking arms.
You watch the boys, stunned, as they all raise their arms together into the air, stretching their bodies as much as they can. As they do, they all start to inch upwards, growing bigger together right before your eyes. Their bare torsos elongate and widen, while their shorts start exposing more and more leg, getting tighter around their thighs as they do. Finally, they stop, each boy a full foot taller. They smile and laugh at each other, while the other team's faces have an extremely jealous look on them.
You don't know what to think as the boys start to bring the ball back to the center of the field, Luke, the redheaded boy, getting ready to kick off. It seems amazing to you that all the boys seem to be treating the sudden growth spurts as normal, even expected. As strange as everything had been so far, it was only getting weirder and weirder.
Before they can resume play, you rush out onto the field, blowing your whistle to catch the boys' attention. They each stare at you, a little confused. "What?" Luke asks as he looks at you, scrunching up his nose and shielding his eyes from the sun with his hand.
"What the hell was that just now?" you ask, turning your head back and forth between the team of shorter boys and the team of taller boys. "How did you all just grow like that?"
The boys all chuckle a bit, and Lee responds, "Don't you remember? Those were the rules we decided on before the scrimmage started. Whenever a team scores a goal, they grow a foot taller!" The other boys smile and nod, agreeing.
"But-- How--?" you sputter, trying to comprehend the situation, but the boys turn their attention back to the game, Luke kicking the ball off and resuming play. You quickly move back to the sidelines to try to avoid the action. What's going on with these boys, you think to yourself. For now, at least, you can only watch them play and see if anything else strange happens.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
