Myrrine peered over the top of her book. Van was writing in his textbook, true, but instead of textbook content, he penned vulgarities in letters large enough to be read from her desk, and crudely drawn stick figures.
With a rush of shock and anger, she realized that one particular figure — with two hastily drawn circles mounted to its torso — was her, judging by the name next to it.
Myrinne molded the voodoo doll with a cold fury, adding bits of clay here and there, taking some away, all the while sneaking hidden glances at Van, to see if he noticed. The delinquent didn’t pay her any mind.
The substitute witch massaged herbs into the yielding clay, to shape the personality of Van’s new body. He still would retain his sense of self; there would be a sense of horror at what he had become, but with a host of more school-appropriate behaviors and tendencies.
She coughed lightly to draw the boy’s attention. “I’ll be going to the teacher’s lounge for a tic. Stay here.”
