Harper said, smiling as her mother shot her a look that said she didn't believe her, but Harper determinedly returned her mother's gaze.
"If you say so." Her mother replied before returning her attention to the television.
Harper sighed to herself and sagged back into the armchair as she blinked a few times. She wasn't quite ready to tell her parents about her late night discovery. No, it was better if they didn't know yet.
Harper's stomach let out a low growl as she felt her belly twisting with hunger. Her parents glanced at her momentarily as she got to her feet, the armchair creaking slightly as she stood. She walked behind the couch, biting her lip as she passed the picture of Jesus hanging on the wall.
She couldn't help but cast her eyes to the floor, feeling her stomach fluttering from more than just hunger. She kept her eyes down until she was out of the living room and into the short hall that lead towards the kitchen.
She ran her fingers along one of the walls as she walked, feeling the cool paint beneath them sliding easily under her touch. Her feet padded silently on the beige carpet as she continued into the brightly lit kitchen.
The room was fairly large, though that was more because it was the kitchen and dining room together. A worn counter divided the kitchen area from the dining area like a lone white finger extending into the middle of the pale wooden floor. The floor had probably been a darker brown at one point, but years of use had long since faded and colored it, especially along the path from the door to the fridge and around the old table. The table was in desperate need of being refinished, though Harper's father always used the excuse that the weather wasn't right whenever her mother brought it up.
Harper made her way towards one of the cupboards, throwing it open as she scanned the contents. She removed her hand from her belly, realizing she'd been rubbing it, and grabbed a couple of individually wrapped cupcakes. She tore into the plastic which crackled and ruffled in her hands before shoving the whole cupcake into her mouth and biting into the sweet sugary treat. She tossed the empty wrapper onto the counter, as she continued scanning the contents of the cupboard.
"You really should be careful about how much junk food you've been eating lately. It's starting to show."
Harper jumped, spinning to spot her mother entering the kitchen. She took a deep breath as she tried to get her heart under control, "Don't sneak up on people like that!"
"Sorry sweetie, I'm just worried about how much sugar you've been eating lately."
Harper finished swallowing the first cupcake and opened the second as she returned her attention to the cupboard, "I'm fine. I'm just a little bloated."
Harper didn't even have to look to know the look that her mother was giving her, but she wasn't really in the mood for a debate right now. She was starving and these cupcakes weren't near enough. She reached up and grabbed a box of cereal and another cupcake. Stepping around her mother, she placed the cereal box on the counter and watched as her mother just shook her head and made her way back towards the living room before the commercials were over.
Harper rolled her eyes, waiting until her mother had left before shoving the third cupcake into her mouth. Her mother had been dropping not so subtle hints about Harper's slight belly lately, and it was really starting to annoy her. Still, she should probably get used to it since it was just going to keep getting bigger. Though then her mother would probably be having a different conversation than just complaining about her daughter's weight gain.
She scoffed slightly as she glanced at the empty wrappers on the counter, then to the cupboard which was loaded with treats and other goodies. She really wasn't looking forward to that conversation. Though, if her mother thought she was just gaining weight, she might be able to delay it for a few more months. Still, that would mean trying to gain weight to hide her pregnancy and she wasn't sure she was fond of that idea. However, she probably would be putting on weight anyway with the pregnancy and this could give her an excuse to indulge herself without feeling too guilty.
Harper smiled and grabbed another cupcake, shoving it into her mouth. Honestly, being pregnant might not be that bad she thought to herself as she poured herself a large bowl of sugary cereal. She could get used to this. | Members who added to this interactive story also contributed to these: |
