"Would you please remove your hand from my chest, human?" Cindy said suddenly, surprising Linda and making her immediately pull her hand back.
"M-my apologies, Miss. It's just that, well, I've been sleep deprived for the past few days, so I wanted to make sure that you were really there and that I wasn't just seeing things. Please forgive me for my indecent actions, Miss. I meant you no disrespect." Linda said, bowing her head repeatedly as she apologized to the alien woman.
Linda was absolutely terrified that her absentminded actions may have just angered this alien woman and potentially even ruined humanity's chances of establishing peace with her race. However, as she felt the gentle touch of the alien woman's hand resting calmly on her shoulder, she stopped bowing and stood back up to look the alien visitor in the eye, adjusting her glasses once again as they had been shaken out of place by her bowing.
"Please human, there is no need to act with such formality. The entire reason that I grew you to my size was so that we could converse together as equals. You needn't treat me any differently than you would a member of your own kind." The woman said, removing her hand from Linda's shoulder and holding it out before her.
Linda, still in shock from everything that was happening at once, simply stared at the woman's hand in confusion. Cindy cocked her head to the side.
"From what I understand, this gesture is a symbol of friendship among your kind. Am I incorrect?" Cindy questioned.
"O-oh, no, you're right. This is just all so sudden. I... I just can't believe that I'm actually talking to a real live alien." Linda replied, taking Cindy's hand and shaking it. "I'm Linda Smith. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss."
"Cindy. Likewise." Cindy said with a smile, releasing her grip on Linda's hand.
"So, Cindy, mind if I ask what brings you here to earth?"
"Not at all. You see, I was traveling through space making an interstellar map, and as I passed by your planet I sensed the presence of many different lifeforms that have never been recorded before. You see, I am an avid researcher, and one of my goals is to one day create a catalog of every species of life to ever exist within the universe. It's not as difficult a task as you might think. Most planets capable of housing life only have a handful of species to catalog, and many of those lifeforms exist on multiple worlds across the universe. Out of the hundreds of worlds I've visited to date, yours is one of only ten planets to contain more than five different species of life. It's also the first one I've encountered to date to have such an enormous magnitude of different lifeforms not yet recorded to exist on any other planet. And that brings me to why I've decided to make contact with you. Cataloging all of the species on your planet would take me far too long as an individual task, so I would like to request your assistance in this matter."
"My assistance?"
"Yes. I would like you to teach me as much as you can about your world and all the creatures that inhabit it. Sentient lifeforms especially. I want to know everything that there is to know about your world. Would you please lend me your knowledge, Linda Smith?"
Linda's eyes lit up with excitement. This was something that she had always dreamed of. An opportunity to spend time talking with and getting to know an alien lifeform on a personal level.
"Certainly, Cindy. I would gladly help you out with this mission of yours. But in exchange for teaching you about my world, I would like you to teach me about yours. Oh, and you don't need to call me Linda Smith. Linda will do just fine." Linda said.
"That seems like a fair deal to me. Very well, Linda, I believe that this alliance will be mutually beneficial. Where shall we begin?"
"How about we start with..."   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
