It didn't take too long for you to pack up your blankets, and pull a small bite of jerky from your pack. While "Hey! Wake up!" Without a moment's pause, he jerked away, even jumping onto a higher branch in the tree. It took him a few moments before he saw you and realized who had called for him. You waved at him before indicating the space you had camped in.
"I'm done packing up, and I'm about to head out. Are you okay with traveling again now?"
He gave you a confused look, but jumped down onto the ground quickly. A couple of feet before the ground, he gave a couple of quick flaps, landing without a scratch.
"W-wow... Guess you really are like a bird sometimes..." You nod as you pick up your pack and haul it on. He seemed to get the idea, following you quietly.
"Come on, then. I think the road is the fastest way back to town." You make your way towards it quietly, seeing him follow a short distance away. He seemed amazingly good at staying close to you, even through the rough terrain.
The morning of walking wasn't too bad for you. He seemed content to follow close by, glancing in every direction as he walked. He could've been a little bit paranoid, but after what he had been through, it was at least somewhat justified. You couldn't help turning back every minute or two, sometimes to keep an eye on him, and sometimes just to make sure that the slavers or something didn't catch you.
You nearly jumped when you heard a loud rumbling, and were fumbling for your spear as you looked around. However, all you noticed was the Krethid, holding his hand to his belly. He paused for a moment, but continued walking without a word. "W-wait a minute... You're hungry, right? You could just let me know..." You have to dash a little bit to catch up with him, trying to get your spear back into place before pulling your pack off of your back. You had packed enough extra for one extra day of traveling, so you could certainly spare a bit. You dug through, trying to figure out what he would be able to eat. "Hang on, let me get some food."
He slowed down a little when he heard you speak, but he was still walking fast enough that you couldn't really stop to think. Holding your pack as you moved made it incredibly awkward for you to try to stumble around, so you simply pulled out the first think you could, a piece of dried rabbit meat. "Here. Can you eat this?" You pushed your pack back on with a bit of effort, poking his hand with it. He seemed a little surprised when he noticed it. He pointed at it, then at himself.
"Yeah, it's for you. I've already eaten, and you've probably gone a lot longer than I have without any real food. Here." You place it in his hand, but before you could even blink, it was already in his beak as he tore at it quickly. You were amazed by how he had reacted to it, but were more impressed that you could now make out a real smile in his face, despite not really being used to his beak and expressions.
"W-wow. Guess you were hungry, huh?" You took up the lead, a little uncertain on how he would act after he was done. He continued walking behind you, his expression a bit stoic again, but you couldn't help but notice the slight spring in his step as he moved.
It was another few hours before he suddenly paused, quickly moving away from the road without warning. You wanted to speak to him about what he was doing, but suddenly stopped. A few merchants seemed to be traveling down the road in front of you, and were quickly approaching. He had clearly done his best to hide, but you weren't sure if it was soon enough.
"Hello, there, traveler!" One of them shouted and waved at you as you walked. There really wasn't much else for you to do but to return the greeting. The few coins you had left with you weren't very much, but it should've been enough for some extra food which you gladly paid for. It didn't take very long before you were on the road again, a new bit of information...
