Chapter #5

That night...

    by: Juac Author IconMail Icon
As you walked back the short distance to your door, hearing the commotion had died down, he began to ask you for the hundredth time, "so what does it mean to be..."

"Being a sorcerer means that I have mastered at least three of the five major schools of magic. This includes, for me; at least 4 elements of the 6 primary elements of elemental magic, healing magic, and psychic, which is the lowest form of arcane. Because of that I can become a full Sorcerer and learn about the magic that regular mages can't learn outside academies..." your face grew solemn.

"What's wrong? Isn't that a good thing?" Tilgasse stepped up to you since you had been walking with a brisk step.

"I kind of...cheated...I learned about two of the Sorcerer arts from my grandfather...he kept journals from when he was in school and taught me..."

"But that means you'll have a one up on the group right?"

"Yes...but it also means I broke the law. I have to be an entree in the academy. But I'm not, yet. So once I enter, I'm off the hook...what are you doing...?" Tilgasse was looking into the side of your face and followed behind you examining the back of your head.

He stopped when he noticed you were looking, "sorry, I thought I saw your brain leaking out of your ears from not having enough room."

"...I'll ignore that statement...is there anything else you want to know that I probably told you before?"

"Yeah, what are the two powers you learned that could get you in trouble?"

"Well...the schools of Sorcery are Arcane, Summoning, and the two major elements Darkness and Light. Grandfather taught me about the last two, specifically Darkness and Summoning. I never really wanted to learn about light magic."

"Did you want to learn Summoning and Darkness?"

"Yes, they require that every sorcerer has to have some sort of Familiar. I've been thinking of making Frey into one..."

"Huh...no wait. Never mind, that's way over my head I'm sure. Besides we've been standing on your doorstep for a while so I think you should go inside. I'll see you tomorrow okay?"

"See you tomorrow Til..." you gave each other a quick hug before he ran off back home. You stood there watching him for a moment before going inside.

...

You lay awake that night listening to the crickets outside in the fields, wailing about the rain predicted to come that night. Their clouds had already gathered and blot out the moon. You were awake partly to hear the symphony, but also out of anxiety that kept your eyes open. You lay awake fully thinking upon what Tilgasse and you had spoken of. You had brought a cup of tea with you to drink before you slept but there it was on the desk next to your bed, full and cold. After noticing it you cast a spell to warm it up just before boiling. When it began to steam you lifted it up and took a sip, "...no sugar..."

When you were about to put it back down a sudden rumble came from outside that quickly jerked it from your grip. 'Was that thunder?' It stopped as soon as it had come, but by the time you realized the cup broke on the floor another quake came. This one shook at the foundations of your home as shelves were knocked over. You also saw pyres of yellow lights floating outside your windows, small yellow crystal in the air resembling quartz. "Earth magic?!" you jumped out of bed, taking your staff from the wall and cloak. "Everyone, get out of the house! Earthquake!" No sooner said then everyone snapping to their attention and running from their rooms. Your parents, little brother, and your dog Frey.

The commotion had escalated into something far worse than what you could see on the inside. The ground was shaking horribly and the sky was red with fire coming from the Eastern edge of town. Demons from the ground and the sky were ravaging the town, even killing demons already living here. "Why are they killing everyone, we have a pact!" your little brother yelled out.

"it's going to be okay Eric, I'm sure the town guard and mayor are doing what they can," no sooner had you said that when two guards on horseback came. One firing an arrow of lightning into an oncoming demon. As the other shielded from it's attack. It fell in a twitching rage. You hid your brother from the sight. "We're rounding up what people we can. Especially able mages and healers. We're moving what villagers we can to bunkers but we need the help of all magic users."

"Why, what's happening?!"

"We don't know! Demons began pouring out of the sky and forests, we have as little an idea as you do but we must have the assistance of your son. You all must be move to the bunkers beneath the Town Hall immediately."

Before your parents could protest you quickly stepped forward, "it's okay mother. I have to go, they need me."

"We need you too!"

"No Mariam, it's alright. Let him do what he needs to. No better mage can." Your father led your mother and little brother to the guard while you stepped towards the mage. he took you up on his horse.

But before you both sped off in opposing directions your little brother yelled to you, "I want you back alive big brother!" And the mage snapped the reins before you could yell back.

He led you to a guard's tower where a few demons, mages, and guards were posted. One in heavy armor approached, "this is the junior sorcerer?"

"Yes I am. What do you need me to do sir?"

"They've already taken the Eastern edge of the town, we managed to stop them there but there's still many coming. From the trees, ground, and sky. We need as much help as we can get; ever killed before boy?"

"Monsters in the woods yes with my hunting friend Tilgasse and his father." The moment you said that a familiar voice yelled from the distance. Til and his father were sitting at the far end. His father, Roan, looking as dark as always in his hooded black and scarred eye. He was a kind man in person but had a foreboding air. He must have been doing a lot for them, he was and still is a skilled warrior from the army. "I think it will be much easier for me to work with them around."

"Good then, Syx get him ready for combat.

You were all sent out into the field as soon as ready. Roan part of the squad of guards protecting your group. Even your dog helped in tracking down demon's coming through the ground. The mission was to take back the Eastern edge, someone there sent a message saying he had full intel on a mystics note. It was signed under the villages insignia so it was real.

Dealing with the demons was easy enough, a few men were injured then easily cured. It was a winning battle and some of the men were impressed with your prowess. Conjuring elemental forces that higher leveled magicians barely knew. Added to that, you and Tilgasse worked like a team more than anyone in the group. When you froze an opponent he shattered them. "You know, I was going to stop you from joining!"

"Why didn't you?!" you asked while charging an electric spell in your staff.

"Because I knew it would work out too well if we did join!" he shoved his sword in the way of the spell and wielded the electricity as he pierced through a demon's armor with ease.

Not to say that the battle wasn't hard. It was difficult to keep things as they were. You were sad to see even one man die, but knew grieving was to come later. The East side was worse then imaginable. You couldn't look down for long, the bodies were indistinguishable beneath the rubble or ripped open in horrific scenes. Even one of your teammates stated, "hell," under his breath. That was when Roan said, "no, Hell is nowhere to be seen. This place is Paradise compared to it's dark fires." He would know, Roan was one of the people who went down to the demon world when an insurrection was attempted 20 years ago. Maybe this was from the same group.

He even told you once, "demon's are not mindless monsters roaming the world. They are just like people, but given great power and strength. but what they do with that power is their own choice just like you mages and we humans." He then pointed over to his neighbor and her horned husband holding their baby across the road. You thought of that day while looking down to a small ragdoll half burned in the rubble of a torn down house.

You have the following choice:

1. The battle took a turn for the worst...
