Chapter #6

Mirror, Mirror on the wall...

    by: Reneg4de Author IconMail Icon
Samantha leant back in her chair, breathing heavily. She stared at the ceiling for a moment, trying to regain some semblance of control over her unresponsive body. After a moment of intense concentration, she managed to wiggle her fingers and toes.

"Thank God!" She groaned, now stretching out her arms and legs before cracking her neck. "That felt absolutely horrible... Maybe I should lay off the magic for a while. Either that, or I hit the books again. Urgh..."

Holding her head, which had developed a dull throb after her failed attempt at magic, Sam groggily got to her feet. Making her way into her bathroom, she began to rummage about for some sort of pain medication. Yanking open a cabinet, she pushed past a half empty tube of toothpaste and a hairbrush before grabbing a small crumpled box. Opening it, two white pills were dropped into her hand and then promptly swallowed.

"Perfect! Now, while they do their thing, I'll see if I can't figure out what went wrong. Though, knowing me, it was probably my own ineptitude more than anything..."
Closing the cupboard, Samantha stared at her reflection for a few moments. Her red hair was all over the place, while her face looked paler than normal. Even her bright eyes seemed a little less vibrant.

"I look an absolute mess!" Sam complained, running her fingers through her hair. "Then again, I guess it doesn't matter. I'm not going anywhere else today".
Even so, she spent a few minutes patting her hair back down before turning to leave. As she went to leave, however...

"Wow, didn't even say hello. How rude of you!"

Sam paused, eyes widening. Spinning back around to face the source of the voice, she found herself looking at her reflection. As she watched in utter disbelief, her reflection smiled and giggled at her before blowing her a kiss.

"W-What... How..."
Sam stammered before falling completely silent, her mouth hanging open. Her reflection... was moving! Not doing what she was doing! How was that even possible?!

"How is it possible, you ask yourself?" Her reflection asked, which only freaked Sam out more. "Well, think about what you did today. Did a bit of writing, read a few pages of that new book you got, went for a walk, got hit on multiple times, rudely asked the guy who's been doing it for weeks now to bugger off, tried to curse him using magic way beyond your limits... Any of those ringing alarm bells in that big brain of yours?"

"Magic... way beyond my limits?" Sam repeated in confusion. "I-I don't know what you mean. That ritual was simple to set up and complete. I had all the components the book asked for. A lock of the targets hair, a jar of purified water and some other trivial stuff... I just didn't carry it out properly!"

"Oh, I don't think you did..." Her reflection replied, inhaling through her teeth. "If you did, you wouldn't be talking to me. But here we are. You're talking to me, the result of your curse. And what was that curse meant to do to that poor man?"

"U-Uh..."
Samantha swallowed nervously, trying to remember. It was something along the lines of... making him feel what she did every time he hit on her? No, that wasn't it... Taking him out of his comfort zone? No, that didn't sound right either... What was she trying to do to him?!

"Well, doesn't matter if you can remember or not. You'll figure it out soon enough~" Her reflection sang gleefully. "In fact, if you just head into your room and look at the mirror in there, I'm sure you'll find out just what you've done to yourself!"

Samantha stared at her reflection before shaking her head.
"No, I don't think I will. This is just a side effect of the spell. In a few hours, everything will be back to normal".
And with that, Samantha turned her back on her reflection and walked off.

=====

"And... Done!"
Dropping her pen, Sam stared at the page before her with a smile. After the whole incident with her reflection, she had returned to what she had been doing before her body had seized up; writing. Normally, she wrote for herself or for class, but she had recently joined a club all about literature. Reading, writing, exchanging literary tips... It was a dream come true for her! She just hoped her work was acceptable...

Gently folding her poem up, Sam let out a yawn. She had so long writing, the sun had completely set. Deciding to call it a day, she left her study and headed for her room. As she walked in, she spotted her mirror propped up in the corner. It had fallen off her door recently, which was why it was shoved in the corner.

As she changed from her lounge clothes into a old t-shirt with a Shakespeare quote scribbled across the front, the words of her hallucination echoed in her head. Before calling it a night, she let out a sigh.

"Well, let's see then..."
Stepping towards her mirror, she stared at her reflection.
"Mirror, Mirror on the wall..." She had started to say when her reflection suddenly shifted its stance. Sam fell silent while her reflection finished her sentence...

You have the following choices:

1. "Who is the fattest of them all?"

2. "Who is the best mother of all?"

3. Something else, perhaps?
