You appear next to Nancy in a room. Armor of all types hang on the walls, as do many types of weapons. Swords, spears, bows and axes were among the most common, but there were also rods, orbs and other magical instruments.
"Wow, this is so cool Nancy. Everything seems to real." Nancy is also excited and starts thinking about what kind of class he would like to play. In D&D there are several different classes. You could be a "tank" type character like a paladin or a fighter and soak up punishment while wearing heavy armor. Or you could be a sneaky rogue a master at stealth and the back stab. You could be a mighty wizard with a spell book, or you could be a holy warrior like a cleric healing his allies.
Before you two can come to a decision a voice fills the room.
"Nancy you have designed this program and given me much freedom. I have interpreted your coding as a desire to play the ultimate game of D&D, is this correct."
Nancy nodded, "Yes I love D&D and I want this to be the ultimate game!"
The voice echoed around the room. "Excellent, in that case I must inform you that should you die in this game you will cease to live in the real world. I will administer an electric shock that will kill you instantly."
You got a scared look on your face and so did Nancy.
"What? That's not what I want at all! OK take us out of the game and I'll adjust the coding."
The computer's voice boomed again, "Negative, the game has begun. Select your class and enjoy the game. Your goal is to recover the Golden Chalice. Once you accomplish this goal, you will be permitted to leave. If you fail to do so your lives will be terminated. Further communication with me will now cease."
Nancy was frantic now, "Computer! Computer! Stop this now. Answer me."
Only silence was the response. You looked over to Nancy, you were incredibly worried. "Uhm... can the computer really do that?"
Nancy nodded her head and chewed on her lower lip. "Yes it can... I never thought... Oh God what have I done?"
Both of you put your heads together to see if there was a way to end the program before the game began but you came up with nothing. Nancy finally said, "I am so sorry for doing this but we have no choice. We are going to have to try to complete the quest before we can get out of here. We just need to be very, very careful. I've designed this program so that we will be physically enhanced depending on the class you play. For example if you pick a rogue you will be able to do back flips and move silently. If you pick a fighter you will be able to wear 100 pound armor easily."
You swallow thickly and realize you were in the biggest challenge of your life.
"What class are you going to play?"
Nancy thinks for a second. "I'll play a sorceress. I spent the most time designing that class since its my favorite so I'll know how to use her best. What will you pick?"
That was a real good question... Since your girlfriend was playing an arcane caster you didn't think you would want to play a wizard, that left four classes left that Nancy had designed.
Class Options:
Fighter: Strong in melee. Can wear heavy armor and deal out strong damage with a variety of weapons.
Paladin: Strong in melee. Doesn't do as much damage as a fighter but also has access to limited divine magic that can heal wounds and harm monsters with a strong evil alignment.
Cleric: Not very strong in combat but has access to divine spell casting. Can heal almost any wound while the spells last...
Rogue: A dexterous and stealth fighter. You can easily dodge attacks but you can't wear heavy armor.
