"My scouting report says you were the team captain and led your team to a league championship,"
It's Eric's first day at practice his freshman year.
"That's right, coach."
"And you played at 180?"
"That's right."
"And do you know what you weigh right now?"
Eric knew that he had slacked off during the summer. Maybe he should have kept up the workouts but somehow he just never got around to it."
"I know I'm a bit heavier. Maybe 200 but I'll work that off in no time."
"Step on the scale, son and tell me what it says."
Eric steps on the scale and slides the weight. 200 then 210 and 220 finally reaching balance at 225.
"225, sir."
"You think you are as quick and agile at 225 as you were at 180?"
Eric's brain is spinning. All summer he'd been so confident about his condition but here he was starting his college career and he was fat.
"Maybe not today, Coach." Eric bluffed. "I wanted to bulk up a bit to be more competitive in college, I'll get down to 200 in no time and be just as fast and agile."
Two weeks later, Eric and the Coach meet again. It's been a rough two weeks for Eric as he tried to lose weight and get in shape, Try as he might, he can't get his sprint speed back and is clumsy rather than agile. Eating healthy and spare hasn't been easy either. Eric really misses those massive ice cream sundaes and frequent snacks.
"OK, Matthews step on the scale and lets talk."
Eric is sure that all his work will pay off. He steps on the scale.
What's it say?"
"220" Eric reads and steps down proudly. "It's working, Coach."
"Son, we need to talk reality here. You can work like a bear and get yourself back in playing shape but by the time I can use you, Joe and Tim will have you on experience and you';; be playing third string. But there is another possibility. I can see you on the line with another 25 pounds or so and it won't matter how fast and agile you are. You'd have to eat big and lift weights but you would start. what do you think?"
Eric was torn. He wanted to be a starter but he was already ashamed of being fat. Should he get his old body back and be a nobody or get even bigger and be a player? Should he weigh 200 or 250?
