Chapter #6Practice makes perfect by: Unknown In the early hours of the morning, Ashley was slowly waking up, streams of soft light filling the room. As she looked around, she took in her new residence. Her dorm room was quite spacious compared to her old room.
Rubbing the crust from her eyes, she got up and began getting herself ready for class. As she was brushing her teeth, she could hear a rumbling coming from the other bed. Her roommate, Emily, had just gotten up and was looking around.
Having met Emily yesterday, Ashley couldn’t have been happier with her. Emily was very similar to Ashley, the only outstanding difference being her timidness. Ashley didn’t mind it, but hoped she could help Emily get past it.
Happily, Ashley greeted her roommate, getting a sheepish greeting in return. Once Ashley finished, she started making breakfast for the two of them while Emily began getting ready herself. By the time she was finished and started eating, Ashley had already gone through half of her own breakfast, some scrambled eggs and a lone orange left.
As she ate, Ashley looked curiously at Emily, who had barely touched her food. Concerned, she asked, “is something wrong? Do you not like scrambled eggs?”
Emily looked up quickly in surprise. “Oh, no! I’m sorry, it’s just...” she paused. A sad look spread over her face. “I’m just a bit homesick and worried is all. This is all so new to me.”
“I understand what you mean. Have you never been to a big campus like this before?” Ashley asked.
“No, this is much first time really even going to school. I was-“ she stopped abruptly as she saw Ashley swallow the orange whole. “H...How did you...?” she studdered.
Ashley was confused for a second before she realized. “Oh, I guess I forgot to mention. My sister has been helping me practice. So far that is about the biggest thing I can swallow.”
All Emily could do was look in disbelief, not having the words to say anything.
“Hey, don’t fret. It took me almost a whole year to get to this point by myself. Together, we should be able to excel past that.” Ashley smiled, trying to cheer Emily up. Instead, Emily just went back to picking at her food.
Without any more words, they finished their breakfast. Ashley could tell Emily was even more timid than before and could only feel sorry for her.
Finally, it was time for them to head to class. As per school tradition, students were grouped based on what they would be studying and what classes they were taking that semester. For the two women, this meant they would be doing most of their school work together, including being partners. As they walked through the maze of hallways to class, Ashley watched how Emily quietly walked through the hallways, almost invisible to everyone.
As they entered the classroom, they saw a few groups had already arrived. Ashley scanned the room and found a table near the rear of the classroom. While she would have usually sat near the front, she thought it would be best to sit in the back for Emily’s sake. Emily seemed to be thankful, but still hadn’t said anything more than a few words.
After waiting around for a little bit....   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
