Now I see two main branches for the normal storyline. First is that the series progresses the way it does in anime/manga but all the girls are just naturally fat (and potentially getting fatter) and everyone thinks its normal.
The second is a more individual approach to each of the three partner groups. You can focus on just one group with the girl (or girls if its Kid's group) getting/being fat, but that doesn't mean other characters can't be fat as well.
First is Maka and Soul. I'm thinking that maybe Maka's mother was fat and she's trying to follow in her footsteps? (Keep in mind that this is an example and you're both free and encouraged to use it along with other potential ideas)
Then there is BlackStar(spelling?) and Tsubaki. Maybe Tsubaki turns to eating to help with the stress of BlackStar.
Finally there is Kid and the Thompson Sisters. It's mentioned/implied that they led a hard life before they met Kid, maybe they indulge a bit too much once they're partnered with him and thrust into the lap of luxury.
These are just my thoughts, you're welcome to try something else though.
