This choice: Janet knocks on Tim's door • Go Back...Chapter #6Janet knocks on Tim's door by: Huntsman
Tim stirred at the pounding on his door.
"Wake up, Tim, or you'll be late for school!"
Groggily, the boy rolled out of bed, his feet touching the floor and lifting him to a standing position in one slightly awkward movement.
"I'm coming," he called out, staggering towards the dresser. "I just need to get dressed."
"You have one minute," Janet called through the closed door, "then I am coming in to hurry you along."
The threat alone quickened his pace. The older girl was a great friend, but he was not prepared to let her see him dressed only in his underwear. Hastily he opened a drawer and pulled out his school shorts. He quickly pulled them on, startled by how snugly they fit across his belly. Normally there was room to tuck some fingers under the waistband, but now there was a slight struggle to fasten the button. Not pausing to wonder about this lest he be caught half-naked by his friend, he pulled on his shirt and started buttoning it from the top down.
The third button was done when the door burst open, and a slender girl with short brown hair strode in like it was her room. As usual, she wore a boy's uniform, the school having long since given up trying to make her adhere to the dress code. She did not exactly resemble a boy, her figure having given up its ambiguous shape two years ago, but that did not seem to stop her dressing this way.
"Your minute is up," Janet announced.
"I am hurrying as fast as I can," Tim returned, finishing off the buttons and reaching for his socks.
"It is not like you to sleep in. What gives?"
"I don't know," the boy replied, sitting on the bed and pulling on his socks, a feat that proved slightly more difficult than normal, the waistband of his shorts digging into his belly. "I just feel really tired this morning. Maybe I am coming down with something."
"Well, you had better hurry. If you skip breakfast we might just make it to school on time."
Tim winced. He hated skipping meals. He was a healthy eater, but his metabolism kept him consistently slim. He sometimes felt like he had to keep up with his body's demands for sustenance. Some of the girls at school hated how much he was able to eat and still stay skinny. Just one more reason they would not talk to him, he figured.
His laces were tied in record time, and as he launched towards his bedroom door Janet thrust his backpack into his arms. He pushed the pack above his head, slipped his arms up through the straps, and his schoolbag slipped down onto his shoulders as he walked out the door and began to run downstairs.
As he reached the bottom of the stairs, Janet hot on his heels, he felt like he had forgotten about something, but he could not think what it was. He put it out of his mind as he ran out the front door and charged down the path and turned left at the gate and did not stop running until he reached school three blocks away.
