Bobby Hilcox was not a very happy child. He wasn't happy at school, where was subjected to the mockery of bullies more often than any sort of friendship, nor was he happy at home, where he found himself somewhat neglected. He was jealous of both his siblings; fourteen-year-old Shaun was a big boy who got to go out and do things by himself, while six-year-old Cheryl seemed to be their mother's favourite and got the most attention and toys, even if most of those toys were dumb girly things. Bobby did enjoy spending time with his father, but he always seemed to be busy with work, and usually wasn't home until shortly before bedtime.
One day Bobby reluctantly logged into his email account on the family computer to check for some lousy homework assignment. Disappointingly, the assignment was in fact there in his inbox, but there was something else above it. Eager to see something that wasn't from his teacher, if only to put off opening something that was, he opened and read the mystery message to find that it was from some stranger named Gene offering him a wish.
He wasn't sure he believed it. Even the email itself almost seemed to doubt its own veracity. Who ever heard of a wish-granting email, anyway? Surely wishes could only be granted by fancy, hard-to-find things like genie lamps and shooting stars. It couldn't be this easy.
Still, he couldn't help thinking how great it would be to be granted a wish for something - anything - to make his life more fun. Maybe this could be real... maybe he'd been given this opportunity because he really wanted it. Because he deserved it.
Against his better judgement, Bobby began to get his hopes up. So he hit "Reply" and typed in...
