Without anything to eat, Casper's antics soon got dull. Looking around, she saw her brothers were too occupied with their doodling to play, and her dad was on his phone, so she eased herself off the sofa and wandered out of the room. In the kitchen, she found her mother occupied with preparing dinner.
"Mom. Mom, I'm hungry." She reached out and tugged on Linda's sleeve.
"Not now, Jessie. You just had some crisps, wait until dinner."
"But Mom! I'm hungry." She saw her mother's face turn to irritation. "I promise to eat all my dinner..." she whined.
"Fine, fine, if you'll leave me alone for a while. Go grab something from the cupboard."
This was how almost all arguments with her mother ended; Jessie had quickly learned that a bit of whining and pestering always got her a snack from her mom, and maybe a drink of soda if she was lucky.
She wandered over to the snacks cupboard and opened it, quickly spying a family pack of M&M's. She grabbed it and hurried out of the room before it could be taken off her, jogged quickly up the stairs and into her room. Sitting on her bed to catch her breath, she leant back against the wall and began to eat great handfuls of M&M's in between deep gulps for air. Although she wasn't quite chubby, she had a slightly rounded middle from a hundred or so extra chocolates over the years, and she was extraordinarily unfit. Whereas most six year olds enjoyed running around and playing tag, she had always preferred sitting down, eating something or talking to her friend Emily. As a result, even climbing the stairs quickly was tiring, though worth it for the reward of chocolate.
Before she knew it, the M&M's were gone, the entire family size pack vanished into her growing stomach, and lay down across her bed, groaning; now she had stopped eating, her belly had begun aching from all the sugar and chocolate. She rubbed her swollen gut mournfully, then undid the button on her shorts to allow it some more room. A bit of the pressure released, she felt more comfortable, and quickly she began to feel very tired.
Well; it wasn't like she had anything to do before dinner. She closed her eyes, and quickly dropped off to sleep.
