Ember was crying her eyes out, her head planted firmly into her pillow. When Cynder entered her dorm and saw her friend like this, she grew confused and concerned. The pink dragoness was always a jolly person, always optimistic no matter how bad the situation.
Seeing her in such a state alarmed Cynder, for something very awful must have happened to upset her like this. Gingerly she approached her crying friend, lying a flawed hand on her shoulder.
"Ember, what's wrong?" she ventured to ask.
Feeling her friend's touch and hearing her voice, the pink dragoness' suddenly lifted her head, staring at Cynder with bloodshot eyes and tears running down her cheeks like a waterfall.
"My life is overerer!" she cried, burying her face back in the pillow.
The outburst made Cynder take a step back in surprise, growing even more concerned. " Calm down, Ember," she said, "What do you mean? Please tell me."
Ember raised her head again, her sobbing dying down, sniffing. "Take a look at that," she said, pointing to a nearby desk, "Then you'll know why."
As the pink dragoness cried softly, Cynder walked over to the desk, picking up a sheet of paper. It was the results of a test that they wrote a while ago, and it was a very important one, counting almost half their final grade. Cynder inhaled sharply when she saw the mark.
"I know," Ember said with a sniff, "It's horrible! I'm struggling to keep my grades up, I'm just so stupid. I'm going to fail the year if it goes on like this, and then my father would take me away to go live with him. I don't wanna go away from herere!"
She burst back into tears, burying her face into the pillow again. Cynder bit her lower, knowing fully well Ember's situation. She was the child of a wealthy duke, who lived off somewhere in Avalar. She came here to study at the Acadamy, and she was good at taking care of people.
The first time Cynder net the pink dragoness she thought of her as a snobbish person that just wanted to steal Spyro from her, but over time she proved to be very lovable and kind, and the black dragoness quickly warmed up to her, soon becoming best friends.
She was sweet, charming, and innocent, knowing a lot about medicine and fashion, but when it came to other things she was a little slow. Even though she failed an important test, Cynder knew not all hope was lost.
Placing the paper back on the table, she walked back to the sobbing Ember and said soothingly: "You're not dumb, Ember. You just struggle with other subjects. Don't worry, the test tomorrow would help you get through the year."
Ember sniffed. "Thanks," she said, "That's if I actually studied for it."
Cynder facepalmed. "What!" she exclaimed in surprise, "Ember, why didn't you study?"
"Because I saw no point in it, if I was just going to fail again," said Ember, wiping away her tears, "But I was wondering if you could perhaps help me. You know a lot about spells from those books you read. Perhaps you can find one that could boost my IQ, even for a little while."
Cynder put her claw to her chin, thinking. Ember was right; she did know a lot about magic. Reading spells was a hobby she picked up after the war, and she did remember reading something about a knowledge-boosting spell.
"I don't know, Ember," Cynder said, "It just doesn't feel right cheating."
"Pleeeeeease," Ember begged, looking at her with big, blue eyes.
Cynder sighed and said, "Alright, come with me."
