This choice: She was the teacher was eyeing her during exercises, but she felt...Odd. • Go Back...Chapter #5Strange changes indeed by: DJ Jaxx Shortly after that the class headed to the locker rooms and changed. Since it was their first day Mr. Garner decided to have some fun with gym exercises. Of course Carolyn was wearing the school's signature blue and white shorts and shirt with a picture of a pelican on it. She seemed to be one of the few students wearing this ensemble as the others were in their own home brought clothes mostly.
Mr. Garner then walked out before the class and lead them through warm ups and other basic stretches. Carolyn found them simple enough, she had been used to it from cheerleading exercises. From there they went on to fitness tests.
"These exercises are to determine your general strength level and to see how I should pace the class." Mr. Garner explained. "We'll start with some sit ups and push ups and move to track and other events."
Carolyn was basically unperturbed by this, but moaned and groaned with the rest of her class.
When they started push ups she found it almost effortless. She managed to do sixty without even breathing heavily, her muscles feeling fine. No one seemed to notice except Mr. Garner who merely wrote on a clip board. A similar effect occurred with sit-ups, then when she ran the 500m dash she finished in school record time. This was the only thing that didn't go unnoticed.
"Jeeze!" said Leo, a track team member. "Steven Tyler didn't even go that fast. You ever think about joining the track team?"
Carolyn was a bit embarrassed. Steven Tyler was the school's top athlete, he was also a practical all star. Although she was flattered she was also embarrassed, cheerleaders weren't supposed to be that athletically gifted. Carolyn wasn't even muscular so she wondered how she had managed to do so much so easily.
She just felt so powerful, she had no idea why.
"You must have good genetics." Mr. Garner said to her from seemingly nowhere, bothering her. "Genetics are an odd thing. They give some of us the extra edge we need to succeed and survive, but they can also have negative effects. What we make into positives or negatives are entirely up to us."
The words he had said were still in Carry's brain as the class bell rang. Almost the entire rest of the day was uneventful, but during lunch she saw David sitting down at a table by himself. She decided to take a seat by him.
"Hey David," she said calmly as she came by, her heart fluttering. "Mind if I sit by you?"
"Not really." he said, not rudely or in a friendly tone. His voice just seemed blank.
"So...did you enjoy class earlier?" she asked as she ate some salad. The boy shrugged.
"It was fine, I think you did well though."
"Really?! That means a lot." she said, " I was worried you'd think I was a freak."
"Why should you care? Ultimately what makes you happy matters most, not someone else's opinion."
Yeah, but I still feel like I was on the spot. Especially the way that sub talked to me at the end."
David was about to say something back when Kim's voice rang out.
"Hey Carry!"
The heavy set ginger then waddled her way over to the table and sat down just as David was starting to open up. Carolyn was exasperated.
"Hi Kim..." she said.
"I saw you over here and thought I'd sit with you." she said, already eating the burger off of her tray and smiling. She then looked at David. "Oh hey David."
"Hey...Kim right?" he replied.
"Yeah." she confirmed. " It's been a long time."
"It has." he said before standing, "look I've got to go to the library. See you two later maybe."
"See you." Carolyn sighed. The 16 year old girl tried her best not to blame her friend.David was barely opening up, but he had at least spoken before Kim showed up. Carolyn was still annoyed as she heard her friend smack on food.
"So Carry, you and him seemed pretty friendly. You like him?"
"Well, kinda." Carolyn said blushing. she saw Kim use her old snicker whenever she was right. It was so odd seeing that obese version of her friend use it.
"I knew it. I must've totally killed the mood."
"Well maybe just a little." Carolyn admitted, her blue eyes consoling, "But just wait a bit next time ok?"
"Alright." Kim agreed as the girls shared a laugh, unbeknownst to either a few of the other popular girls saw this and came to the conclusion that Carolyn was pitying Kim.
Time passed and the school day ended. After a long bus ride home Carolyn arrived at her home. It was a boring suburban house that her mom struggled to pay for.
Getting out her house key Carry went in and saw that everything was neat, yet no one was home.
Looking down she saw a note.
Carry, I'm working late tonight. I made dinner for you, and there are snacks in case you are still hungry. I will call you when I get off.
Love, Mom
Carolyn sighed and just went to her room to get some of her books covered and other first day assignments in order.
Eventually though....
