"You always take more notice of the appearance of strangers, so to ensure that Emma will ignore my appearance I had to make myself far more familiar to her. The easiest way is for her to think of me as one of the family. I felt you may object to Emma thinking of me as her sister, so she now believes me to be your girlfriend."
You are temporarily stunned. Whilst you can see the logic in what she has said, you already have a girlfriend, and hadn't considered dumping her quite so suddenly.
"Don't worry Daniel. It is only a minor adjustment to Emma's perception of me."
"Yeah, I was a bit more concerned about her perception of my real girlfriend." you respond.
"That has not changed. As I said, Emma now perceives me as being your girlfriend, and therefore takes minimal notice of my appearance."
"You mean she thinks you're Stacey?"
"In essence, yes. Every time Emma sees or hears me, she will think I am Stacey. Therefore she will not ask any further unnecessary questions - or refer to me as your 'little friend' any more."
"I'm sure she wasn't being unfriendly at all. You're just not quite..." you trail off, not really knowing how to finish your sentence.
"I bear her no ill, do not worry. Even in my own time I was not widely liked."
"Why not? I thought that witches then were supposed to be the local healers."
"Yes, but there was always a distrust of people with powers. Besides I may have been a little.. now what is the word that you would use... naughty."
